    Following recent posts on these pages about XE1 v 1.5 firmware being due "any day now". I have been trying to update every day and this lunchtime it has actually begun downloading something!
    I'll report back when it's finished to confirm v1.5.

    Can confirm v1.5 now installed!
    My testing so far has had the following results with the troublesome combo disc's.
    The Good Shepherd still freezes with the same error code on the previously troublesome chapter 18.Hollywoodland loaded first time all 3 times I tested it unlike before when it took about 6 attempts.Children of Men seems to play through the chapter it stuck on before but I had already played through this disc after I thoroughly cleaned this disc with Russ Andrews reveel.
    It seems this update may have fixed some disc compatibility issues but not all.

    You download directly with the player via the ethernet link. I don't think they post the firmware on an internet page, but offer discs if you call customer support.

    Has it cured the lip sync and CD audio dropout problems?

    Thanks in advance

    I wonder how big these downloads are. It takes ages - even longer than the Wii :boring:

    I didn't time it. Around half an hour I think. I suppose it'll depend how fast your internet connection is and how busy the Tosh server is at the time.

    Definitely not cured lipsync issues, and I never listened to a CD on the player so not sure about CD playback. As far as the information released, this was just a firmware to remedy certain playback issues on some discs, notably the NatGeo "Relentless Enemies" disc which about six people probably own.

    They'll get round to the real issues of lipsync and faulty bass management over analogues in their own time. Maybe.

    Updated the firmware on my XE1 earlier this evening, did nothing to help my problems with the Children of Men HD DVD.

    My firmware finally finished uploading. No apparent differences. Watched 'An Ideal Husband' on SD. Stunning, particularly the audio.

    If you don't have a network setup just unplug your pc from the modem and connect it to the ethernet socket on the hd dvd player instead.

    I have the universal title - The Good Shepherd - also with lots of problems & contunually locking up on my UK XE1 - but not my USA XA1 .. I finally gave in & returned my copy to movietyme ( 2nd copy ) for a refund. A friend bougth a copy from Amazon USA, which he let me try & amazingly works fine on XE1..

    My view is that these universal titles may have a production fault & batches of pressing may provide differing results.

    I assumed it might be that simple but my computer connects to my modem via USB.

    Sounds like you may have to buy a router with usb or a usb to ethernet converter if such a thing exists.
    It dose sound unusual for a modem not to have an ethernet port.

    Yep. Unfortunately the only sockets are the DSL-in and USB-out. Is the firmware available on disc?

    Yes you can phone Toshiba for a copy on disc and you'll probably get it just as the next update goes online.

    It does have a progress counter (as opposed to a bar) which counts through the download steps that it's carrying out.
    Doing my upgrade now and the counter is listing steps out of 37, formatted as x/37. I'm on 8/37 as I type this.

    ==========
    UPDATE:
    DOWNLOAD 37/37 (completed)
    ==========
    Next update phase would seem to be the installation of the downloaded updates:
    STEP 5/5 (completed)
    ==========
    Player just shut itself off after completing STEP 5/5
    ==========
    Manually booted the player up again (turned it ON) and it's now at firmware level 1.5/T20T
    ==========

    - I'm updating an XE1 that was on v1.3 (as installed from the update disc included in the box bought from Dabs towards the end of Feb).
    - The number of downloads would, I suspect, vary from machine to machine depending on what had already been updated/downloaded to the machine.
    - The 5/5 STEPS carried out after the DOWNLOADs are completed will probably not vary as this would be a phase with a set procedure that the player OS follows and has to complete in order to successfully upgrade the player.
    - Ethernet settings are:
    1) DHCP = ON (My ADSL router is the DHCP server)
    2) DNS = ON (ADLS router DHCP srv provides this info to DHCP client machines)
    3) Network Speed = 1Mbps Cable (set this to 1Mbps even though I have a 2Mbps ADSL service. I suppose 1.5 or higher would also be fine, but hey...)
    4) Cookie Setting = Accept

    Total upgrade process took approx 30 mins.

    If your PC already has a network port free (or if it doesn't and you use one of the USB devices) you should be able to make a bridge. The modem connects to your PC and your HD DVD player connects to your computer. You then go to Network Neighbourhood and select both network connections, right click and click on Create Bridge (or something similar).

    Have a look at:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/crawford_02april22.mspx
