My DVD-A1 was built 10/02 and has Denon Link SE.
I've been waiting a couple of weeks for the Pal prog / MR firmware, and today my dealer handed me a CD-ROM which I can confirm works flawlessly.

I know there's a different version of firmware available that works with early DVD-A1's, but its fatal to SE machines (apparently).
I'm not sure I should have been given the disc, but I was!
So, if anyone wants a copy I'm willing to share it.
Unfortunately the file is too big to attach here.
I'm prepared to email it to a couple of people if you post your email address, but I don't have broadband and it takes ages.
Anyone got any good ideas on how to share it?

I don't want to get my dealer in trouble, so I won't mention their name.
But I can assure you it came from a reputable company.
Here are the firmware numbers from my machine:
    PANEL 6234
    DRV 6193-2
    ESS 6235

Interestingly, they didn't change after the firmware was installed.

I've been a victim of mis-information in the past, and I wouldn't deliberately inconveniece anyone by posting this if had no clue of what I was doing.
However, you still try it at your own risk. I take no responsibility if it doesn't work.

    Who wants it?

Its interesting to see that your DRV version is later than 6100. From what I am lead to believe the old version 6100 was partly to blame for the lock ups etc players were seeing that had SE Link/Old laser pickup and MR firmware. Hence the updated DRV version to cure this.

I will be interesting to see if you find all is well.

Can I also ask on the outside of the box next to the serial number did you have two black dots ?

    Jules,

rip the files from the CD, compress them into one file using RAR, ZIP or ACE an send them to me (sultan@gmx.at). This single file shouldn't be bigger than somewhat about 3 MB.

I will create an account on filesanywhere, put the files there and post details here. So everyone who needs them can get'em from there. Deal?

    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi Guys,

no freezing problems with my machine to date, and that includes the Region 1 Fifth Element that is known to be troublesome.

There are no dots next to the serial number on the box, but there is a gold D-Link sticker. Why do you ask?

Chris, I'm sending you the files now.

The reason I ask is that my box had only 1 black dot and one circle. I am told that if you have two black dots then the ESS chip used in the machine has the chroma bug fix built into the silicon.

Good news about freezing etc. My player is being replaced by Denon as I was having quite a bit of trouble with lockups/freezing etc (July 02 build).

Mmm, my machine has been and remains freeze free with region 2 discs.
But unfortunately, it has frozen a few times now on the disc that iplayed fine first time - i.e Region 1 Fifth Element.

It could be that when we watched it the other night it was the P&S version on side B, but the widescreen version freezes! Oh Pants!
It could be a worn disc, so I'll reserve final judgement until I've tried a few more.

This is my 2nd machine, and I suppose I should take comfort from the fact that it does play other discs ok where the previous one kept freezing.

But if it turns out be another duffer, Denon will have lost a loyal customer.

    Fingers crossed.

Whats amazing about this whole issue is that a player a this price point should be totally trouble free and reliable.

My old Pioneer 737 worked flawlesly for 3 years with not one problem with any disk.

I agree and if Denon also supply me with a replacement thats faulty I will be getting a refund. A bit of a shame as when its working the player is absolutely stunning.

I will be interesting to see what the dealer has to say.

The firmware number which changes is found by pressing the display button on the remote.

Mine give a number of N625, my old player with DRV6100 changed to P625. This may explain a problem I now have.

I would be interested to see what you get as you have the new DRV version.

    Hi Phil

The firmware number on mine after pressing display is P625.

I've not played too many DVD's recently as I've been mad busy with work, but its still only Fifth Element region 1 that's caused me any trouble so far. I'm thinking of replacing that particular disc with the Superbit version anyway.

The firmware upgrade doesn't affect the playback of DVD Audio discs, but I can't yet say if it works via the digital link because my amp hasn't yet had the SE link upgrade (Come on Denon!).

Thanks for checking that. It does confirm what I had guessed.

My previous build of player when upgraded gave the same version as you have and worked fine on my TV. The new player has DRV 9123-2 and when upgraded it gave N625. I thus cannot get anything other than a B&W picture on my TV.

I suspect that the firmware update is different due to the DRV change.

Could you possibly e-mail the contents of the disk so that I can try and recover my problem ? It should be around 3mb.

    Thanks

    Phil
