I have used Skype in the past, but always sitting in front of my PC with a webcam with built-in mic.

I would now like to try using the SkypeOut and SkypeIn features, and would like the idea of a wireless phone beside me in the living room linked to my PC.

Can anyone recommend a model or any good deals going at the minute?

Thanks.

How can it work without having the PC on? (sorry if this is a stupid question).

It's not a stupid question.
Many people realise that Sype can be had by running Skype's proprietary software on a PC.
What many don't realise is that
1) It is proprietary - not an open standard like SIP.

2) It is perfectly possible to run either Skype or other SIP software in an embedded system like a modern telephone that contains some form of digital processor and also run the relevant internet connection protocols and networking layers embedded into the phone.

So the linked Philips phone runs such software on its own processor with no need for a Microsoft operating system or Intel/AMD processor. They will have arranged an agreement with Skype and paid them a licence for the necessary information (source code etc.) in order to do this.
