    Hi All,

My friend is making a steath shelf for his car, he's made a great job of the shelf in MDF. I know you can buy a suitable shelf already made, but he's a wizz with the powertools & had the materials available.

The downside is that he's looking for a suitable covering in a chocolate brown colour, as most places do black or grey it's been a bit difficult tracking down some suitable material.

Any tips or suggestions please ??

    Many Thanks
    Lee

Thanks for the link currentsupply, but as i'm based in the UK that could be an expensive call !!

I did have a look at their website, but the brown cloth is too light. It needs to be carpet like fabric like they do in the car audio shops.
    http://www.nexxia.co.uk/CarInstallaccessories/acoustic_material.htm
    http://www.auto-connect.co.uk/acatalog/Acoustic_Carpet.html

Just a few links that sell the carpet like fabric that i'm looking for, but have most colours except brown !!

I'll keep looking, but must be a chocolate brown colour to match the interior of the boot area.

    Cheers

    Edit:

One thing i have thought of is GOM fabric covering (Plenty of colours & styles and is suitable for acoustic purposes), but as far as i know it's only available in the USA ??

    You want radiosilks.co.uk
I've just bought some chocolate brown cloth from them and it's excellent.

I'm afraid not. If you look on their website the colours they offer appear to be pretty faithful - certainly the brown I bought was a very close match to that shown on the site.

That trim looks a little lighter than the Radio Silks brown. But I believe they will do special order colours (no doubt at special prices!). I suggest you have a chat with them.

The trim does look a bit light in that photo, but not much.

I'll give 'em a call tomorrow and see what they have to say.

Hopefully get an order in then, as me mate just now needs the fabric to cover the panel and then it'll be finished.

    Thanks for your help Bernard.

    Cheers

Lee, you're welcome to the remainder from the cloth I bought if you'd like it - I only had to cover two small speaker enclosures and there's enough left over, I'd have thought, for a parcel shelf and speakers. You/your mate can either collect it (I'm near High Wycombe) or I could post it to you. You should be aware, though, that it's not like carpet - being acoustically transparent it has to be quite thin.

    Hi Bernard,

Thanks for the offer, but i'll think i'd pass on that one.

I've emailed a few suppliers last night, so it'll be interesting what happens there.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Cheers

    Hi Bernard,

I had two replies........one from Nexxia Designs Limited www.nexxia.co.uk
they've only got what's listed on the website.

And the other was from Auto-Connect sales@auto-connect.co.uk and they didn't have in any in stock either, but knew someone that did ??

I'll let you know what it's like when it turns up, and post a picture of the fabric so you can get an idea of what it looks like.

    Cheers

Hello Lee. There's no phone number given on the website but the order form gives the fax number as 01992 899012. When I ordered from them (via the fax form) the cloth arrived next day. Perhaps you could send a fax asking them to call you. It is curious that they don't provide a phone number. The cloth is not like carpet, it's the thin stuff you see on modern speaker coverings. May not be thick enough for your purposes.

    Hi Bernard,

Thanks for getting back to me. I don't have access to a fax machine, so that the only option would be a letter by post ??

I'm still looking for other sources for a suitable material, i can't believe you can't get this material in brown.

Another option i had was to use the GOM fabric cloth they use to cover walls in cinema installations. Plenty of colours & shades to look at.

    Cheers
    Lee
