    Hi All,

I'm trying to put a home-cinema system together and need a good sub. I'm ok to spend about £300 perhaps a little more if there's a big jump in quality.

Can someone help please with what sub to buy?

I'm still looking for an amp....

Eyeball, are you just looking to buy brand new or 2nd hand? In the 2nd hand arena you could get a stonking sub for £300....

Probably the best value for money sub in your price range is the BK Electronics XLS200 which is available directly from the manufacturers here. Much has been written about this sub by various forum members over the last 18 months and it has been 99% positive. As you would be buying the sub directly from the manufacturer you would be effectively cutting out the retailers overheards and would be buying a £500 sub for £279

Another sub worth considering if you hurry is the Ruark Log Rythym which has been reduced from £800 to £250 here.

A further consideration is the second hand route suggested above by Smurfin as there are often some great subs come on the market within your price range with the Paradigm Servo 15 being just one example

Most subwoofers will go deeper than even expensive floorstanders although some may not do it as well. Either the BK or Ruark sub should complement the Aegis Evo speakers nicely by filling in the bottom end for music plus giving the extra clout for films

Thanks for all the replies...I'm most likely going for the BK, it's had some good reviews, thanks Ian.

I note Lostinapc is asking about the aegis evo 3's.....how are these set up? As fronts or rears?
Could I set up the Aegis evos' as rears and have bookshelf and centre speakers on the front?

    Thanks again all.

The aegis evo 3's are floor standing speakers ,most people would use them as fronts.Take a look HERE ,this is the full evo package.

Damn...the whole set is a bit on the erm, expensive side.
Guess I'll have to start saving those pennies I thought were worthless.

    Thanks for the info

Good thing about buying speakers you don't have to buy them all at once, you can add them when you can afford too.

The XLS200 is only available directly from the manufacturer in deepest darkest Essex and I presume that you can listen to one down therem whilst very few dealers (if any) sell both REL and MJ Acoustics products so the answer to your question is probably "nowhere"

We sell (Sevenoaks Edinburgh) both the MJ Acoustics and REL ranges and I think you are likely to find that a lot of other Sevenoaks branches keep few models from both manufacturers.

Yeah I'm gonna try the REL and MJ at Sevenoaks; thought it would be nice to try the XLS as well though. Out of interest, how do you demo a sub? Would I need my own speakers and amp (and room size), or could I judge them on any equipment set up?

Really the only place you will know how they sound is when they are up and running in your home.:D You can gauge the merits of the subs in a demo room but until you get them home you have no idea how they will react with your room acoustics:(

Ordered my BK today and I can't wait to get it.
My 9986 arrives on Friday this week but I'm a little upset to say the least due to my floor stand cabinet for the tv only arriving in two weeks time, and therefore leaving me no where to set up the tv (and rest of equipment) until it arrives meaning it's gonna sit in a box all this time. :censored:

I wanted to get the whole thing set up before relatives arrive but this looks unlikely...... :(

Contacted electrical discount uk to get the stand but they said two weeks. Why don't retailers just stock these items!??

    http://www.electricaldiscountuk.co.uk/itfx_product_details.php?pid=3429

Soon as I get it, will let you all know the outcome though... :smashin:
