I miss games like Banjo Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur day. Even crash and donkey kong are fun. The problem with running the N64 emulated games today is that the controlls and more specifically camera have not aged well. What fun platform games can you recommend to hold me off until the release of Yooka-Laylee.
It needs to be fun with an interesting world and not take itself to seriously. Tight controls are also important and humour is also good. I don't mind emulating something on PC, GC or Wii but would like something newer than N64 games.

Do you mean 2D platform games? Mark of the ninja is good fun. Tomb raider 2013 is a very good game too, it's sort of an open world platform. Apart from the first 2D game I mentioned I can't think of any others because I don't play them (bet I have a good few unplayed one's in my steam library though )

You won't find many 3D platformers on the pc. Rayman origins and legends are good games. Ori and the blind forest is definitely worth a look. Bastion, braid maybe even the trine games may appeal.

Lol origins and legends are great games. I was going to say to the OP get a Wii U if you want platformers as Mario, donkey Kong etc are the best in the genre.

Rayman has been at the back of my mind to buy for ages now but it always slips my mind when I sit down and think what to play.

He'll probably pick a wii up for £15 now, I've seen them go for less!

Rogue Legacy is a pretty fun rogue-like 2D platformer.

Banjo Kazooie and Conkers Bad Fur day are the type I'm really looking for, 3D platforming whimsical fun. Mark of the ninja and Tomb raider 2013, while both good games re not really what I'm looking for. Both I listed are bright, fun games with interesting eveironments. I'm tired or repetative platformers. I loved that in Banjo every new level felt so fresh and different.

rayman origins looks like what I'm after, while not 3D it looks like a solid 2D platformer with interesting characters and environment.

As for a Wii, I prefer to emulate with dolphin as I can get better visuals. I have the official motion+ controller with nunchuck. Mario galaxy did feel nearly as fun as Mario64 but I will give it another try and the DonkeyKong was OK. If I had a WiiU I would get tropical freeze which looks excellant. Likewise The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds if I had a 3DS but I'm not buying a platform for a couple of games. Twilight sword was excellant I might add though I didn't like the spirit bit.

Trine artifacts of power looks interesting

Indie games are probably your best bet for platformers. Check out the mighty Limbo, Braid (as mentioned), Thomas Was Alone, Guacamelee!, The Swapper and so on. Some great stuff out there, especially in the Humble Bundles.

    And not forgetting Portal.

Most of my personal favourites have been mentioned in this thread, the more recent Rayman's, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dust an Elysian Tale, Trine&Trine 2 (not played the third yet). All great games!

huble is a good bet but they have much less marketing and can be hit and miss. I was dissapointed by long horn but loved Limbo, Braid was Ok and swapper but challenging but I wouldn't call it fun. Ori was repetitive fun and challenging enough to finish. 3D platformers like banjo and spyro are so 'Rare'. psychonaughts was ok, I probably got halfway through it. The kickstart looks great but the game is more than a away. I'm keeping an eye on it.

Portal is technically a 3D platformer.

    Mirrors Edge as well.

    Alice : Madness Returns

    FEZ

They are not all so cartoony, but are all pretty original.

Guacamelee without a doubt. Very good game, challenging and the controls are spot on.
Also Adventures of Pip, decent old school platforming and great controls.
