I want to replace my ancient 40" Samsung as it's starting to give up the ghost, the diagonal including the bezel is approx 45" so I think a 46" TV will not take up significantly more space with the modern bezels we have now. Too large a size is a concern as it would start to overhang the tv stand and might hit the wall of the recess when turned.

Special features like 3D and smart are not a priority, image quality is.

I have had the Sony w905 suggested, which seems to be £900, and also the SAMSUNG UE46F8000 which is £800.

I was just wonder if anyone here could offer any additional advice on which TV to buy?

Those are older models and hard to come by new. 2014 models will have 48" screen size if you want a new tv. Samsung 48h6400 is a good choice according to reviews or 42" models. You may also need to consider panel type if watching on an angle
