    Hi,

I'm shopping for new speakers for a 5/7.1 system (budget probably around the £2K mark).

My biggest restriction is the centre speaker. It will have to sit within the gap between glass shelf and bottom of plasma screen.

Now, I haven't purchased these items yet, but I'm guessing it'll be around 16cm, most likely no more than 20cm.

I've seen long (maybe wide is a more accurate term) centre speakers in the occasional picture, but never really taken any notice as I've never needed such a shape. Now that I do, I'm struggling to find any suitable candidates.

Can anyone help me generate a shortlist?

    Cheers,
    Andy

It's a great speaker. I've got one as the center in a Canton CD1 setup with the original center as the rear 6.1 channel and it all sounds very good, but the total price, from JJ on this forum, is way below a £2K speaker setup and if the rest is going to be near it the CD50 may be the weak link, not to mention the sound difference.

You could always buy a Canton system and then a CD50 would still have the same sound, and that sort of money would buy an absolute killer setup from JJ.

    Andy,

One other for your short list maybe. Anthony Gallo Due - I have got it here, running with A'Divas for all the other channels and the full package (7.1) was £2k plus a Velodyne sub.

5.1 and you have got £500 towards the sub.

Never thought I would buy what I had always thought was a "lifestyle" system - blown away by the quality.

Yes, that's an option - especially as I've been looking at them as potential rear speakers.

I know its a difficult subjective question, but are they any good?

    I think a 2xR270 + R225 + 2xR90 can be good a good pack with a REL or MJ sub.

Try a search here in the forum for "Radius"...

 a K5 is hardly a 'long thin centre speaker'

I don't think you can generate a 'shortlist' of just centre channels - you really need to consider a 'system' that includes a long thin centre channel.

The Artcoustic units mentioned earlier offer very high quality sound, good engineering and decent looks; you could even consider the DF-Multi that has your front LCR all in one chassis.

    Best regards

    Joe

Are you serious about the sound of the Artcoustic centre?

I heard them being set up with a test tone with a pair of on wall Artcoustics and was amazed that anyone would who heard these speakers would buy them.

The centre sounds completely different to the "matching" left and right speakers making a soundstage that's a complete jumble!

Has anyone ever seen a review of these speakers?

I doubt you ever will in a decent hifi mag!

Sam does appear to be very passionate about this doesn't he? Geckos brands, M&K (god they're great), Triad (fantastically well made) and Runco (everyone else measures projector wrongly..).....etc, seem to be very high in his opinion.

20 + posts, and all of them about Geckos stuff. check out www.homecinema.uk.com. There you go, saved you the bother...

If there is not something going on here, then I apologise, but you have already stated you love M&K - "'cause the pros use it"- and I assume nothing else will be right for you. Fine , good luck......... I like my DF Multi... :)

    Hello SamSaid

I'll keep in mind the next time someone is planning on listening to test tones to not recommend the Artcoustic kit :)

The Diablo C-1 and DF-Multi work well and we've had no complaints about them so far.

HiFi Mag and Centre Channel seems an odd pairing - I didn't know you used a centre channel with a HiFi!

    Best regards

    Joe

PS What do magazines know anyway
