I live up north and am planning to take my family to see the tourist sights of London. To keep the costs down, I'm borrowing my in-laws caravan. The plan is to stay at a site in Crystal Palace as it is convient for getting into the city centre. However, a friend of ours told us that it is a bit grim round there and not the sort of place that we should be staying. Is that true?

If you want to stay in a caravan park around London, it'll have to be Crystal Palace. Hyde Park is very nice, but I doubt they'll let you camp there. :D

Get yourself a Mercedes, a white transit and some gas bottles. You can park where you like for a few days - and you don't have to take your rubbish home

Very true - anywhere where caravans gather tends to be a bit dodgy....... :rotfl:

It's not a static caravan. The in-laws haven't been there before.

I can think of a lot worse places in London tha Cyrstal Palace, saying that I have never been to the caravan park so cannot comment on that but but CP itself is OK

I live in Crystal Palace and its fine. There are some crappy areas around it, but the 'top of the hill' itself is ok. Loads of shops and restaurants in the triangle, a ten min walk from the campsite. Some decent pubs there as well (weatherspoons etc).
The campsite is in a corner of the park (big one with its own athletic stadium!).
Trains to Victoria and London Bridge for tubes into town. Also buses all the way into West End.

Don't bother camping in London itself. Get a campsite on the outskirts, somewhere in North Surrey for example, and commute in using the trains, and get around using the tube. Contrary to popular belief it's easy getting around london using public transport - unless you use the buses! :D

Crystal Palace is a hole, as is all of South London (said the Arsenal fan!). :D :hiya:

I've stopped at the crystal palace caravan club site a few times, it's really nice, one of the cleanest camp sites I've ever been on, and has a high wall to keep the Londoners out  :D

I've also camped in the park itsaelf, but I wouldn't recommend that. There were over 500 of us that night - eve of the annual London to Brighton run - so we had the numbers on our side.

There are some nice pubs/restaurants within a short walk, and we have never had any trouble.

Crystal palace station is only 5/10 minutes (you can shortcut through the park) walk if you want to catch a train into the centre (Victoria IIRC).
