Can anyone give me some much appreciated advice. I am just about to move into a new flat that doesn't have a communal dish. I am worried that I won't be able to get a signal from my balcony. Other flats do have sky but I am further along the block and am worried that the building will block the signal. Is there any way I can check this out on my own (ie some device) or will I have to get an engineer in?

Please help. Otherwise my plasma is useless!!

Your plasma wont be useless mate have a look at Satcure and satalogue websites.
Their are more websites than you shake a stick at for this info mate all you need for a rough idea is a compass! you need to look at 28.2 deg East and an elevation of ( cant remember) If you can see clear sky you should be alright.
