am considering the Sony NWMD3 player.

I have got most of my CD collection already ripped to 256k, 320K or variable
MP3 files and stored on my audio PC, mainly ripped by Audiograbber. (I had a
Creative Jukebox which has been stolen).

Can I readily transfer my MP3s onto the Sony without any issues/hassles?

I am inclined to the Sony because of the long battery life compared to
Ipods. The Creative players have issues with the headphone sockets falling
    apart.

I get the impression that the Sony software prevents me from doing this.

Why don't you wait a couple of months for the 5G ipods?, extended battery life is a cert seeing as they are using a new far more power efficient chipset. Expected to be released in July. ipod mini battery jumped from 8 to 18 hours with the new chipset, the ipod photo has a 15hr rating with the old chipset, with the new chipset the 5G will be operating in Sony's 30hr range, even with a color screen.

    electron,

just to clarify, if you mean the NW-HD3 then in my experience I have never had a problem with getting any MP3s onto the unit, but many people will try to steer you clear of the NW-HD3. i'm very happy with my one though.

and if you're gonna wait for new unit, then NW-HD5 is being touted with 40 hours playback

    Yes, I meant the NW-HD3.

The info I seemed to glean from the web was that MP3s already ripped and on your PC are prevented from being loaded into the Sony - only new rips. An attempt at stopping file sharing presumably.

So if you can do this, then it's a good choice.

Where did u hear that? HD3 supports MP3 28 - 320 kps inc VBR. :) Just tell SonicStage not to convert format 2 Sony's proprietory format & u r good 2 go. Also good transfer rates, 8mb per sec for me = one song per sec

I thought about these points too. But small size of HD3 =
Cloysterpeteuk if u suggest Ipod G5, why not HD5 which has been confirmed for a May/June release with 40hr removable battery!
Just google for info on HD5 although buttons on HD5 not that nice in MY opinion

There was a post about someone being unable to transfer files from one PC to another and onto the player - but these were probably files created by Sonicstage - does it "mark" files in some way? I have been unable to relocate the post.

Anyway I needed to make my desicion on Friday afternoon and I plumped for an Ipod (the availability of accessories was a plus).

Anyway, thanks for the input from everyone.

Any info available on reliability of Ipods?

nope, you can transfer any mp3s you want, downloaded or otherwise, as long as you do it through sonioc stage. one word of warning though, you mentioned some variable bit rate mp3s. the hd3 cant play em at all. you will have to re-encode em if you have a lot of em that could take a while.

and why would you want a 5gb ipod! its 4 times smaller for gods sake, if your going to reccomend an ipod get the 20gb version. though i would still reccomend the sony over the ipod.

He is referring to the 5G, as in 5th Generation, ipod.

I have a huge amount of VBRs, so it would have been a disaster if I had gone for the Sony and been unable to play them.

Shame u bought Ipod before I could say this: maybe that someone didn't register HD3? If u do (create CONNECT account as well) u can use up to 5 PCs! Also ALL software with MP3 players add a "tag" 2 files - its called digital rights management. Piracy and all that.

Sorry for double post. Sony HD3 can play mp3s with VBR! Now, if only i had a digital camera or at the very least a webcam.... :)
