Having lived next to the A1(M) for about 20 years, i can see, and more importantly hear how much the traffic has increased over that time. I actually went out in the back garden this afternoon, and did a basic DB measurement, with a radio shack meter (bought for my AV stuff). It ranged anywhere between about 68, to well over 90 (large rumbling lorries), with an average of around the 74-76 mark. What i'm wondering is if there is a maximum acceptable limit set by the government, and if over that limit, would i automatically qualify for the special noise reducing fencing i have heard about.

Also heard a very depressing statistic the other day on tv - the number of vehicles on the U.K roads in the last 10 years has increased by 30% :(

I live within 500 yards of the A1M and the A14 interchange

    :(

so bloody noisy when its wet. Cycling to work almost deafened me with all those wide low profile tyres roaring away.

I'll go quietly when I pass your house on Friday, off to visit a factory in Doncaster.

 I travel over that stretch quite a bit as my other half lives in St Ives, not a nice stretch of road at all but at least it must have been convenient when you first moved in.

In relation to Joe's original post there's some information here:

thanks for the driving considerations :)

the flightpaths are all north east of Doncaster at the minute, so we dont see or hear anything at all. But i doubt i would anyway - the A1 would drown it out :D

One of the more annoying things, is when kids stand on the bridge nearby and encourage the lorry drivers to sound their horns (some sound like bloody trains). I dont blame the kids really, but the lorry drivers could have more consdieration in built up areas like ours.

Got some friends who live just near Manchester airport, christ i could not live there. It's noisy as hell, and i spent two thirds of my life living in the city centre so i'm used to noise, but that's off the scale. They're selling up because of it

I HATE traffic noise. I'd take screaming babies or the Crazy Frog ringtone over a Motorway anyday. :(
