The whole of the game tonight (on ITV) could of fitted on a 3 1/2" floppy disc the amount of compression they used. Even just before kick off when the camera wasn't moving, the pitch was blocky, distant players had artifacts around them and the lines on the pitch reminded me of PS1 days.

I watched it on terrestrial in the end, and was thoroughly disappointed, both with the result, and the picture quality through sky. The picture was so bad there was no way of seeing which end the ball was let alone whether it crossed the line!

I totally agree. At the time I thought it was just my reception  .

ITV (and other channels as well) are going to have to sort things like this out when analogue is finally switched off.

Is not one of the things touted about digital that the picture is better than analogue?

it may be better some times, but for such a big event they have to start getting it right, what happens when it comes to the world cup, it seems non sky channels are the worst (ie bbc). can't wait! brazil v england : green squares v white squares (kicking about a white artifact)

Phew! For a while there I thought it was just my setup that had turned bad on me.

Only had SKY+ fitted at the weekend, noticed an improvement in pq over NTL Digibox and football started to look ok-ish on SKY Sports but last night was awful indeed.

Thanks for the links Boy Lex, on it.

Not true. BBC football on Freeview, when doing its own coverage of UK matches (i.e. not taking somebody else's feed) offers top-class PQ. You can practically pick out blades of grass. On ITV last night it looked like the teams were playing on a giant sheet of green cloth.

The deeply cynical among us would think that this was done deliberately so as to encourage the take-up of HD television when it arrives (wow, the picture is so much better compared to normal) - of course, this isn't true though, is it?

Absolutely no need to apologise but thank you for being so polite. Makes a change from the other forum I lurk on, Digital Spy, which is very entertaining and informative but can be astonishingly bad-tempered!

I always avoid Sport on ITV via the satellite as they are usually much worse than my terestrial reception - and that's quite poor as well !

Nope mainly because ITV have shown no interest in offering or even talking about High Definition and it is they not SKY they control the bitrates and therefore picture quality on the ITV channels.

For the most part SKY premium sports channels are good quality although as more people get higher end and larger displays the limits of slightly above average bitrates are being reached.

I routinely watch the footy on BBC1 via analogue simply because the Dsat service is so poor although some regions are better than others thanks to stat muxing which makes it easy for broadcasters to cut corners:(
I've never had a problem with the F1 on ITV but their footy coverage isn't any better than the BBC and the PQ was shocking during the Euro Championships last year.

I watched via Euro Astra 19.2 degrees. This is via d-sat and picture had no halo's round players, pity same could not be said for normal uk centric sat feed! Watching via Sony 44 inch

Lets face it - the picture quality on sky is terrible. Look at Japan , America , Australia etc. and compare. The problem with complaining about Sky's service is that their response is going to be 'Hi Def is coming soon..' . Let's hope they don't mess it up... :lease:

Doubtless we'll all end up watching hi-def Sky and thinking to ourselves isn't this what Sky should have been like from the start. They better get it right !

I don't have any confidence at all in ITV, if they can make it look cheap and nasty, I'm sure they will ;)
