My mate bought a second hand ps4 the ps4 has been banned from psn.
Seems the previous owner or another owner had racked up a bill and the console has been banned.
Now I can understand an account being banned but the hardware has been bought and shouldnt be allowed to be banned.
    It's all very strange.
He tried to reset the console he can't log in with his own profile to psn the console will only play disc based games.

    Anyone come across this before

    Cheers
    Si

I'm sure a PS4 can be banned too, leading to the exact scenario your mate is in, I think the advice is never to buy a banned PS4, which unfortunately doesn't help your scenario. I don't have first hand experience here, so there may be a solution, but if you cannot login to the console via a valid account, that sounds like only a call to Sony could potentially resolve. And the answer could be it was stolen or similar..

Its not looking good from what i`ve scoured online. I`ve yet to see anything that says Sony will un-ban the console. If it was sold without advertising the fact its banned then that's a pretty gutless seller. I reckon all you can do is try and take it up with the seller and get a refund. Where did he buy it? it will work but only offline for single player games and wont download updates from what I`ve read.

I'd definitely go back to the seller. Unless it was bought knowing this then I'm pretty sure you're out of luck.

No never knew it was banned to be fair I can t find much online. He's tried calling Sony but they are not budging he's tried everything.
Anyone think down the line when new games get released, needing a new firmware would be neccesary to run newer games.
Can you downalod new firmware via USB

You can install firmware via USB, though I`ve never seen or heard of anyone try it on a banned console.

Pretty sure you can download the firmware.

I'd take it back to the seller seeing as they have ripped you off basically.

You can certainly do a clean install via usb, but I suspect that doesn't change the PS4 serial number..

Edit: If you want to do a clean install, look into upgrading the hardrive threads / documentation, as that uses a full firmware file that isn't a patch and can be used with an existing harddrive.

Ok thanks he phoned Sony this morning and it seems the previous owner or whatever had used a stolen credit card.

To do a clean install, choose
right at the bottom (forth option).
    PS4 System Software
The download is significantly larger than the regular 'Update' firmware. Shouldn't have any problems updating the firmware via USB even if console is banned (when you upgrade your HDD you are required to install the firmware onto the new hard drive while your console is still offline).

As stated above, I feel that the only solution here would be to go back to the seller, but given that he's used a stolen credit card and then sold the banned console without informing anyone, I can't see him budging. Small claims court may be an option, or if it was bought from Ebay via paypal or a credit card, then he could try a chargeback.
