Im almost decided on the AVR300 over a 3805...... the onboard decoding has really impressed me..... matched the Arcam CD73 (well to my ears) when fed digital.... and certainly better than digital feed to the 3805 (perhaps the Wolfson DAC's are better than the 3805's Burr Brown????? i guess thats why Arcam moved to them for there CD players from the BB's? (and hence why use in the AVR) Anyhooo what i would like to know is the "limitations" in functionality of the AVR300 in comparsion the the Denon. My current receiver is a Denon 1602.... which i certainly can't fault for its age and $'s. The 3805 is great with plenty of configuration options.... Keep in mind i need NO video switching due to HTPC. Now the 3805 can "store" different speaker level settings dependent both on input type and audio mode (ie stereo, surround etc). This is a good thing as i do have different settings dependent on audio mode in my current setup. Can the AVR300 do the above??? (i assume i can?... given a old bottom feeder denon even could) I also noticed while testing the Arcam that direct mode only applies to the analogue inputs. Now the 3805 can have direct and pure direct also on digital inputs (obviously uses the digital DAC but by passes processing etc). It also has Tone Defeat ablity on even surround modes. Can the Arcam do this? Feed analogue from the Arcam CD the Denon closes right in on the Arcam in my opinion (speakers Quad 12L's). While i think the arcam has a slight edge in perhaps a touch more dynamics.... maybe a little warmer..... i think it is supprisingly close..... is this a fair comparo? As about however using onboard decoding for 2ch CD the difference is very noticable....... not sure if the same would apply to DD and DTS?? The Arcam i can get for $3000 Aust $'s (rrp is $3698) the Denons rrp is $2500.... so probably $2200 actual price. In not sure the arcam is worth the extra given its ill throught out operating system if you will compared to the Denon (i guess its experience in this field (ie AV)) Oh yeah my speakers are Quad 12L's and Quad Centre , wharfdale rears Decisions like this kill me !!!! Any assistance is much appreciated.
