Question Lighting control for new kitchen extension

Hi all,

I'm really new to the world of home automation, despite being known as the family geek. We're currently renovating our UK house with a full kitchen extension, and rather than a whole bunch of dimmers, I started looking at something a bit fancier. Here's the requirements:

- Kitchen: 4 internal lighting circuits
- Garden: 2 external lighting circuits
- ability to set scenes across the 6 above circuits
- must be trigger-able from a wall panel (wife-friendly)
- remote control (hardware or phone) for in-garden control
- can be installed by an electrician

Nice to have:
- iOS control
- scheduling (presence security during vacations)
- 2 additional circuits (hallway and front entrance) would be nice to add-in

I've been googling like mad the past few days, and something like the Lutron Grafik Eye seems to fit the bill, but I don't know whether I need to have a specialist come and install it, or if the sparkie can do it themselves.

Plus, there's all these other technologies that I don't know what to settle on: ZWave, Loxone, Rako, LightwaveRF, Control4, etc, etc.

Would love some guidance if anyone has advice.

Thanks,
mflat

Hello!

I don't know where you are, but we had Rako controlled lighting recommended and fitted by our sparky. It all works as we wanted, and does what you request above.

They are based in Kent, and our sparky said they were very helpful over the phone getting everything set up.

Hey - I'm based in London. I'm trying to discuss with my builder and their sub-contracted sparky as to which systems they've installed in the past.

I would suggest that you may have a better chance speaking Swahili to your Spark, rather than discussing automated lighting projects. It is outside of the scope of knowledge or experience for most contract electricians. You would be better off talking to a Custom Integrator, Home Automation Supplier or lighting specialist. If you understand what you need, your electrician maybe able to install it, but asking them to design and spec maybe a bridge too far.

Lutron Graphik eye is easily installable by an electrician but is unlikely to fulfill your automation needs. Maybe have a look at something like Clipsal CBus that would meet all of your needs. I have an almost identical setup but have chosen to use Fibaro ZWave lighting modules and a home hub (HomeSeer). These allow me to use any light switch that I choose and can be controlled by switch, Alexa, PIR, Phone or any other automated sequence including dusk-til-dawn, timer, geo-fencing or any other trigger that I wish to use. The down side is that I need to run a hub to control the modules.

Our sparky is near Tring in Hertfordshire, and I know he has done work in North London. It was he who recommended Rako.
