Good review Steve, I do agree with everything too, I bought this player a few months ago and it is rather boring to look at and is surprisingly, for a 2017 UHD player, has a rather a basic list of features. But obviously it's the playback I am interested in and that I cannot fault, added to that the promise of Dolby Vision via a software update (I have been told by LG UK that this is being rolled out in the UK around October time), then it was the cheapest option at the time of purchase.

I know there has been issues with noise with the player, something I have encountered the odd time myself. It's a no frills UHD player with excellent playback and i'm happy with it, just wish the DV update was a little sooner but with not that much content and Netflix DV working on my LG OLED, I can be patient for that little longer.

      Very fair review.
I got mine free as a promotion with the C7, but even so I'm disappointed in how basic it is.
It does it's core job as a disc spinner, but that's it. There is no feel good factor in owning one.

Suprisingly generous review Steve. I had one of these and I thought it was very poorly made and felt like a budget player. The remote was especially poor. Mine also was extremely loud when playing 4K discs.

I also have this player and agree with the review. The player is functional but the lack of DLNA is annoying. My player is also very quiet in operation, so no complaints on that front. The interface is very "Retro" especially compared to my LG55C6 but again it's functional. One thing to note is that when used with my C6 the UP970 Youtube app plays HDR files perfectly (I assume it converts them to HDR 10) This could make the UP970 useful for TVs that can't play Youtube HDR, if you don't already have a Chromecast Ultra (which also works).

Coincidentally the Dolby Vision firmware update has just been released in the UK. I've updated my player and checked with The Fate of the Furious 4K disc and it works, so that's good news. I'll update the review properly once I've had a chance to fully evaluate the new firmware.

Over here (Netherlands) with also got an update today. No DV TV so no check on that, but HDR Youtube seems a bit less fluently in panning shots prior to the update. But maybe it's something between the ears? ;)

Oh right that is good news Steve! I'll check when I got home! I emailed LG only two weeks ago and they said October! So that is good news (assuming I get it too)!

Just playing devil's advocate for a second...

If you're an AV nut, reading this review at AV Forums, there's a better than average chance that you've already got a decent Blu-ray Disc player (Oppo?) which will upscale SD and de-interlace 1080i, as well as 30 other pieces of kit which can access every streaming service under the sun.

You may well also have your kit tucked away in an AV stand or cupboard with a closed front door, and a universal remote.

That being the case, the only thing you want from a UHD player is to play UHD discs, raw.

As such, this is a very attractive option.

Good point. Yes, it plays discs.
Problem is it feels cheaply made and inspires no confidence at all.
First one I had the disc drawer wouldn't stay closed. I've just tried to update its replacement which seems to have succeeded much to my surprise. It was far from pain free though. It sent the C7 into an endless source change loop, showed a series of random garbled screens twice, crashed while signing into Netflix, crashed trying to open settings.
Oh, and the remote frequently needs a second press of a key to register.
In short it's not worth the £250 it seems to be selling for now. I'm not sure it's worth £150 to be honest.
Mine was free so I haven't thought about my options yet. I'm going to try treating it as a dumb machine by disconnecting from the web to see if it behaves next, but I'm so pleased I didn't pay anything for it.

I've got the oppo -203 that freezes on discs . So this lg with Dolby vision is very appealing and a darn sight cheaper that the oppo and maybe more reliable ?

When mah teevee finally gets the promised Dolby Vision update then I'll probably pick one of these up just to do some comparisons. I've already got the Sony X800 and the Panny UB900 so I'm loathe to spend £650 on the OPPO just for DV, but £200 for what is essentially a DV 'transport' would be fine with me.

Seems like a logical choice once we see a bit more DV content on the market.

Steve can you confirm if you suffer from the same HUGE black crush that i'm having on Resident Evil Vendetta 00:06:05 scene? i'm on OLED E6 (Dolby vision settings must be on Dark Movie and by default, since change anything leads to huge clipping)

Dolby vision Black crush & clipping

I'll check my DV discs (DM1, DM2, Power Rangers and F8) when I get a chance. I have both the UP970 and UDP-203, so I'll be able to compare the two players as well.

Search for the darkest scenes of the movie, then change from Dolby Vision Dark Movie to Dolby Vision Vivid (Both must be AT DEFAULT, nothing touched, since OLED LIGHT leads to clipping) and see if there's black crush like it happens to me on Resident Evil Vendetta, i'd say there's like a 0-5% crush, it's insane how much detail is hidden because of it

Hi Geoff, which do you prefer between the Sony and the Panasonic when it comes to 4k movies?

I'll always like the Panny but the Sony is the better all-round player. I know you said "4K movies" specifically but apart from the Panny being a touch worse with banding then 4K playback is largely equal. But for things like loading times, USB playback support and DVD playback then the Sony kills the Panny.

I've got the Panny 700 was hoping the Sony would have DV. May as well wait for newer models if there's not much difference.
      Thanks

That would be great to update the review after the LG UP970 DV firmware update and compare the UP970 and UDP-203. :)

I am just looking at the cheapest option on a UHD player and at LG UP970 for £215 for this weekend is looking good. I have a Denon Atmos system (7.1.4) with the Denon DBT-3313UD player, so only need a cheap UHD spinner with DV to go with my LG OLED 55B7V setup.

I assume if we are sending the direct picture to the TV instead of the player adding anything, then the picture quality is gonna be the same as the sony and oppo player ?

I just had a price match agreed with John Lewis for £215.10 with a two year warranty. Amazon one year, but I can use the saving towards a UHD.

Just put in another with JL to price match against Richer Sounds at £199

I was planning to go directly to the TV from the player to get the best picture and then outputting the sound via 1.4 HDMI to my Denon.

I agree. I have the OPPO 105D which is wonderful. It has all the bells and whistles bar of course 4K and all the jiggery pokery that follows on from that. The price of this LG player has just edged under £200 on Amazon and at Richer Sounds and as such is a relatively attractive option.

I had a wander into Richer Sounds Newcastle earlier intent on buying this player. I came away empty handed. It was in stock. The fellow I spoke to strongly hinted the price would go up shortly. He did try and push me towards a more expensive player such as a Panasonic or Oppo on the basis the LG is cheap and cheerful. I put it to him that I would use it purely as a transport. The answer was it’s up to me to choose. I didn’t buy it simply because I think the price for most of these machines is bound to keep dropping over the months.

At less than £200 it all of a sudden becomes a more interesting option. At such a price I would have thought twice about getting the Oppo.
