LG TV blocking IR remote

I have a 50" LG, it is a few years old now but it is now coupled to a JVC sound bar. The problem is that when the TV is turned on the IR remote on the sound bar is really weak, When the TV is off the soundbar remote works fine but weakens as soon as the tv is turned on. Also the remote on the tv itself is really intermittent. There are no blockages between the remotes and the IR sensors on the units. I thought that remotes operated on light. Can the TV cause the remote on the soundbar to not work correctly? If so how can I combat it?
The sound bar and tv are connected via optical cable.

Any energy-saving lightbulbs in the vicinity?
These emit IR and can affect remote control operation.

Nothing changes. It works fine with the tv off, when i turn the tv on it suddenly only works from really close up.
Could the screen be emmiting some kind of ir blocking light?

Try turning down the TV brightness, that can sometimes help, reposition your Soundbar, or, replace your TV.
