"UK first market to see 4.5mm thick set after Korean launch; priced at £9,999

LG has revealed that its 55-inch OLED TV will be arriving on UK shelves this July, making it second market it will launch in after South Korea.

The TV – which is just 4.5mm thick – is currently being showcased at Harrods, and is available for pre-order. It will retail for £9,999.

"We are proud to be the first in the world to offer consumers a big screen OLED TV," said Brian Na, president of LG Electronics UK.

"LG's next generation display is a true game changer, which will forever alter the way we think about TVs. Since OLED TV was first unveiled, we've been working tirelessly to bring what we call 'the ultimate display' to market."

Andrew Mackay, UK commercial director of Home Entertainment and Home Appliances added: "Following the LG launch and supply to the Korean market earlier in the year, the UK is proud to be the next market to launch LG OLED TV, as this innovative and premium model launches first in Europe to UK consumers."

Great news. At last a oled tv with a large screen
At 55ins screen for the lounge I would have liked a 65ins oled tv
    Maybe one day?
Ill get this rather than a 4k tv
    The way farward now
    Maybe 4k in 4yrs time?
    Then 8k tv

Sounds good. Personally I think they should market it as "Organic LED". OLED may look too similar to LED to many potential buyers, with the potential for confusion.

I wonder how many normal punters will walk into a Currys, and walk out with a £10,000 oled tv?

Saw this tv in harrods today wow!!!!! gobsmacking deep blacks looks really nice in the flesh, and the speakers and sockets are built into the stand which didn't sound to shabby either. Paper thin from the side to.

It's definately a looker... and looked to have the blacks of a plasma without the power consumption and image retention.

But i'm sure as they are readily availible for review or owners get hold of them we should hear more detail on them, but definately worth a check in the mean time.:smashin:

If Harrods already have a set, why has a reviewer not managed to get one to look at yet ? Final firmware worries or sommat ?

hmmm Im not that convinced pricing (even at this stage) is that great.

By the time this is on sale, Sony will have already released a similar screensized 4k set for less (only pricing currently is for the US model released a month or so earlier at $7000)

Not interested in OLED in the slightest until its a 4k set as well (especially for that kind of money)

I'm sure if LG made a loan set available, reviewers would be more than
    happy to look at it.

It is not released until Q3, they are only taking pre-orders at the moment and there is limited demo stock. As soon as LG launch they will have their review sets available. I should have more info in the next few weeks on timing of reviews, hopefully.

Sorry to be pessimistic, but even on this forum people are reporting image retention on OLED displays (and even LG warn about it somewhere on their website). I'll definitely give it a few years before taking the plunge from plasma to OLED (not least for cost reduction reasons!)

It's just the same with plasma tvs; some people report very few issues with image retention(my case), whilst others report problems.. google galaxy S3 screen burn, issues are being reported with that Oled. Of course the users may be running at silly brightness/contrast levels.

Yes, as mentioned in that thread, I also have the 15” lg oled and it shows absolutely no signs of IR. Given how good the 15" is, I'd be very surprised if the 55” lg took a backwards step.

As an oled early adopter, I'd be happy to test a 55" set for lg if they're looking for testers... ;-)

I wouldn't say no either.. Wouldn't be surprised if LG have already given some sets to their employees to beta test; I used to get prototype Nokia phones to test when I worked there..

Also LGs site no longer warns of IR so perhaps they are more confident in their tech.

Been meaning to go to the new technology centre at Harrodsburg, finally got round to it today was expecting my socks to be blown off by the LG OLED but they remain firmly attached.
If they had been launched a few years ago the wow factor of the thin screens would have more of an impact but a 55" LED screen isn't that much thicker.

Having seen a few ultra HD TVs and now OLED nothing impresses me as much as the jump to HD.

One thing did puzzle me, are the new LG OLEDs wall mountable? The one I saw had all the interfaces in a somewhat heavy base, maybe they are (base aside) light enough to be mounted like a picture frame.

That's interesting to hear. How did the blacks compare with those of the LED sets, albeit in presumably brightly-lit conditions?

I've been nursing along my 17-yr-old standard definition CRT set, hoping OLED might be the technology which matches it for picture quality, but I'm getting seriously sick of waiting and am wondering whether it'll even be worthwhile.

It was showing footage of Toronto, one of those combining time lapsed fast moving traffic and cityscapes, I suppose I was expecting to see something akin to a giant photograph in quality, it was probably the lighting conditions and the footage that didn't inspire.
I have 55D8000 which I would say is by far the best TV I've ever had, would I spend £10K to have the same screen size but in OLED, at present no, would I spend £7K on an F series Samsung 75" TV? maybe.

I have been following OLED for a while now and it is great to see a decent size TV in production. However, from what I can understand from the website the base is not detachable. I presume this mean's you cannot mount it on a wall? Or am I missing something?
