Hi - 1st post so hope I'm in the right place. Had a 42" Hitachi plasma for the last 6 years and I'm after a new Tv. Never liked the look of most lcd tvs I've seen in the shops - but 1st visit for a while at the weekend and was stopped dead in my tracks by the lg oled without knowing what it was. Now I know that's the tv for me but need some advice.
The 55ea980w is still on offer at £2000 but the newer 55EC930V is on sale at nearly £3000
So can someone please tell me if there is a significant difference to warrant spending that much more on the newer model

One other question - has anyone watched live sport on these tvs and how does it handle motion ?

      Any help appreciated
      Munch.

In terms of value for money the 55EA980W is the better option.
The current selling price, the inclusion of 4 pairs of 3D glasses, the THX certification, the better build quality, and the absence of the somewhat problematic Web OS that is incorporated into the 55EC930V.

Against that must be weighed the possibility of receiving a 980W that exhibits faults and which, due to it being phased out, may not be replaceable with another 980W.

In terms of motion handling, OLED's capability appears to be very much in the eye of the individual viewer.
I cannot see any artefacts on my 980W.

If I was in your position, I would wait for the price of the 55EC930V to drop, and then purchase one from a retailer, such as John Lewis, who not only offers a 5 year warranty, but has an excellent reputation for after sales service.

The 930V is currently on offer at Costco for £2219.98 (inc. VAT) including 5 Year warranty and 90 money back guarantee! I hear good things about their service.

Thanks for the advice - appreciate it - will definately be an oled in the house before too long. The 5 year guarantee is a prettty important factor. I guess worse case scenario if the cheaper 55ea980w developed a fault then maybe they would replace it with the newer model (he said hopefully). I see John Lewis was out of stock today for the 55EC930V ! They must bring them in two at a time like on the ark : )

Just an update - went for the lg 55EA980W as stocks were getting low and i loved the design - 3 years service plan for £1800 (ex-display - but june manufacture date). Couldn't be happier so far - hd picture is fantastic - 3d is pretty good too. Was worried I would struggle replacing the plasma - glad I took the plunge - it's insanely thin, the curve is subtle and adds to the stylish look. Obviously going to a 55" from a 42" has wowed me a bit anyway but all in all.........an awesome tv.

      Hello friends

A friend (SuperCurro) and I have made a direct comparison between two OLED 55EA980 vs 55EC930.

Both have been calibrated using i1 Display profiled against a i1PRO2 and the disk patters TED Lightspace CMS

      Just to get an idea

1º OLED 55EC930 NOT TOUCH CMS
      [IMG]

2º OLED 55EA980 NOT TOUCH CMS

      980
      [IMG]

During testing of actual viewing differences were observed no noteworthy between the two screens

Direct in a blind test, you would not see any difference between the two screens. They look the same.

Avatar was used to assess the movement in the two screens

      CAPTURE
      [IMG]
      CAPTURE
      [IMG]

Unlike what is said, the movement is absolutely identical in both screens

Back on direct evidence, you would not see any difference with Real Cinema activated

Uniformity appeared similar between the two OLED. Slightly better 930
OLED 980 was manufactured in July 2104.
930 OLED was manufactured in October 2014

The two screens are very good, very impressive

      for finally
We put one next to the OLED Panasonic VT60 and quickly became clear.
      The differences were dramatic contrast

I remind you that the pictures do not do justice to establish differences, just to show the basis of the work done

Hello everybody, as KYOKUSHINKAI says both models have exactly the same imagen quality and the same movement. The diferences are the price, the stand, the sound and the curvature.

For a complete comparative please read this post:

      LG OLED 980 vs 930

And for the comparative PLASMA vs OLED please read this post

I'd just like to say that this is terrific work, guys, and you should be credited for producing reports which, from my perspective, are far more valuable and insightful than any I've seen from a professional magazine or website.

      Many thanks!

Care to explain why it's no good? As your post stands it's unhelpful and of no use.

      Hi

I have demoed it about 10 times now in John Lewis Milton Keynes and even the LEDs from LG and Sony look better! The colours are not accurate and look dull. My 55ea980w always was the best TV in John Lewis by far but this one is a joke.

I find this part a little confusing " There is a transition from black to white noise is clearly seen that there are DNR, but it is so slight that it does not affect the definition, in fact, the OLED has more definition at all times that the plasma does not have DNR " How can you have more definition on a TV with DNR being applied than one that has not?

Great vs pictures and good info that i agree on :smashin: i take the 930 over the 980 any given day. Better gaming lag and build quality.

I know reviews was impressed by black levels on first oled reviews but now they are more focused on other issues ... like the poor motion the 2 have... :) good as maybe Lg reads n improves on the 600 lcd like motion next year.

It makes me worry about how good the 4K Oleds maybe, clearly they are going to have to cut corners again on these!

So you are making a major comparison on tvs based on how John Lewis have them set up?

This quote aswell i agree on ..

On the LG 55EA9800 I reviewed last spring, I noticed that the darkest grays on full-field test patterns showed considerable non-uniformity. That wasn’t the case here

      tele1962:

Generally an OLED seemed more detailed than the VT60 plasma
The image seemed cleaner. However, there was a transition from a dark scene to a very bright white where noise reduction in an area of the screen was observed. This was hard to watch, even when looking for it thoroughly.

Did you notice any of the high frequency sharpening that is a problem on the 930, could it be that giving the impression of a cleaner image?
