Hi as you have said there is no review but LG surround systems always do well in the WHICH magazine tests and this one has good connectivity apart from hdmi in(it does have optical in however) so I have have just purchased one from TRIBAL UK £258.14 inc's free delivery

LG HB405SU Home Cinema Systems With Blu Ray - TribalUK.com

that's exactly why i was looking at it. optical in is a MUST. let me know what you think when it arrives.

Hi, I noticed that noones mentioned anything more on this in a while and since I was looking at the same system I was hoping someone might have some more feedback for me on this system. The cheapest I've seen this system for is £195 at amazon (link below).

LG HB405SU 5.1 Blu-ray Home Cinema System with DLNA: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

This seems like a really good price for a 5.1 system with blu ray (cheapest one I've found) yet the one amazon and play.com appear to be very positive.

Any feedback would be appreciated! :)

For its price, you get a lot for your money. The speaker output is 400w which makes it perfect for smaller room sizes. The HB905SU packs more watts making it possibly a better choice for large spaces.

The beauty of this system is that it plays virtually everything you throw at it. I have it connected to my router, which means you can stream files to it from your computers. I mainly use this for DivX and MKV Blu-Ray. It also plays SRT subtitle files. You can also plug in your USB drive with a DivX or MKV movie directly if you prefer.

The LG menu looks nice, perhaps moving around in the menus isn't as fast as say your computer but nothing really upsettingly slow.

It also comes with Netcast, which offers Picasa, Youtube and Weather via the Internet. I have used the Youtube feature but trying to search via your remote control is rather time consuming. Plus it has its own interface which unfortunately does not allow you to select the HD version of Youtube videos. A missing feature I would say as you are not able to get any decent picture quality from the regular Youtube videos, especially watching them on a large-ish screen (mine is 46").

The system takes a few seconds to boot up, perhaps 10 seconds, which might put some people off. You can't just use the player as a CD player by putting a CD in and pressing play. It needs to go through the booting cycle when you turn it on. Another downside perhaps. I don't use CDs as I stream all my music from a media server to the LG.

The sytem has two optical inputs, one of which is connected to a BT Vision box in case they stream movies with 5.1 surround. Not all Blu-Ray 5.1 systems actually have an optical output so I consider this a plus.

It also allows you to configure the output of each individual speaker, so if you want a bigger punch in your rear satellites, this would be possible (or to turn the base unit down).

The system lacks a earphones output for some strange reason. I don't really know why they left this off as I am not able to listen to the sound in all peace and quiet without disturbing anybody else. The lack of this feature might actually put some people off when considering buying this unit.

I bought the system as it comes with the networking feature and attractive small satellite speakers that fit nicely in my lounge. And for a price of under £200 you can not really go wrong. I have seen them advertised for a lot more in retail shops so be careful to find yourself the best deal via Google Produc Search.

Very happy with it, although it would be completely perfect for me if it would do/contain the following:

- Better Youtube interface with 720p/1080p video option
- More widgets on LG Netcast (The US version offers oodles more content)
- Earphones output
- Gigabit wired network connection
- Wifi 802.11n connection
- Instant CD/MP3 play without having to boot to the menu first
- Thicker speaker cables which clip into the back of the speakers (I changed all the cabling, but had to unscrew, resolder and modify the hole in the speaker to fit better cabling)

Hope this helps a bit, if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Seb.

Seb - what hard drive are you using to play the .mkv files? I've tried connecting two drives (NFTS formatted) with a single .mkv file on and both have not worked - any help with be appreciated!!

Hi...

I'm think of buying one of these...seems great value for less than £200.

I'm particularly interested in it's ability to connect to my DLNA server to stream movies, music and photos.

I was wondering about it's ability to stream DVD content - currently I have an ageing media centre PC..All the kids DVDs have been put on my server...this prevents sticky fingers damaging the disc or the player, and the stream great to the MPC - I use DVD fab to copy the DVD to the server where it saves it as a VOB file..

Does anyone know if this LG unit is capable of playing these VOB files, or will I have to re-copy the original disks to a different format?

Thanks

I might be wrong but i think you need to use FAT32 drives to play MKV's from. Try a flash drive with a MKV on and see if that works.

I just listened to this gem Of an all in one today in pc world.

What I really liked the most were the tonal quality of the speakers, they had a very good mid range response and the sub blended very well.

I am almost convinced the speakers must be a rebadge, they sound too good to be LG !

The connections on the receiver are v limited so I think it is probably on the way out perhaps soon to be discontinued. I just hope they bring out a model that uses the same speakers or even tallboy with the same drive units.

I want a receiver ideally that is 3D and has HDMI ARC .

Well despite the shortcomings - 'only' 300W, not 3D ready, no audio output at all other than via the 5.1 speakers and over the HDMI out, no HDMI in, no HDMI ARC as far as i am aware - I bought this LG HB405SU system with exhilaration !

The LG system is for the bedroom. I already have a separates Blu Ray surround sound set up in my living room: Denon 3800 BD player using multichannel analogues to a Tag McLaren AV32R, to 6x stereo Linn LK140 power amps (L and R are triamped Aktiv, other 3 are biamp Aktiv) and a REL stampede subwoofer. The LG system audio quality is obviously on a much smaller scale but IMHO on a par with this separates system.

I have to say that this LG's 'hit-the-nail-on-the-head' audio quality is like no other high street all in one system I have demo'd recently such as Sony E370, and the Samsung offerings.

OK , at 300W, the LG won't be rattling the windows, but it's 'oval' pod-like satellites put out a sturdy lower mid range registry. I am well impressed with the audio quality of them and their build quality and high gloss black finish. Without exaggeration, I honestly find the sound of them addictive, I can listen to them for hours. I was convinced they must be made by someone else but have been unable to prove this.

And what sealed it for me is that LG seem to no longer be including these speakers in their new range so it was a case of grab it before its gone.

The remote feels nice too. Oh, and did I mention I liked the speakers :) .

Last night I connected up the Ethernet OK.

I wondered if anyone might know the answer to this : The BD player can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA. But is it able to do the same for movie files (eg MKV ?) streamed over the Ethernet from my home PC ? I don't have any as yet, all my movie files are iso's and won't work i think . So I though i would ask.

I have had this system since November 2010 and I have 30 or so mkv files, the best audio contained within these files that I have are 6 channel DTS files, but to answer the question, mkv files play without any problems, my main reason for buying it really, obviously a wired connection is best for the 1080p stuff and really just the best way to do it really.............it really does just play everything practically.......problem I have with my mkvs is that I cant fast forward or rewind on most of them, however I dont think this is the receivers issue but an mkv issue..........

Enjoy the system........

hi,i was wondering whether anyone would think this is suitable for a room 3m x3m which is very small???,the wattage is only at 66w with the sub at 70w so i figured it might be good for it,can you turn the bass right down as i dont want to wake anyone up during the night???,also can all of the speakers be wall mounted?

thanks

My lounge is maybe that size, maybe a half metre bigger either side so I would personally say that, yes, it is suitable for your room size.......

And there are wall mounts available, just google sattelite speaker wall mounts, 8 buks for one is a bit steep, but I will be getting them soon.....

Hello,

When you say you can play MKV files , how do you play them? I want to download blu-ray movies, transfer them to a usb memory stick and then play them on the player. Is this how you do it? I want to download and play blu-ray without having to purchase a blu-ray burner. A 16gb memory stcik is much cheaper than a burner!Any advice, gratefully received.

Without spending the money a usb stick is ideal, 16gb as you say will be able to accomodate the larger 1080p video and audio...

I actually use a network drive, Netgear ReadyNAS Duo RND2110, to stream all my files directly to the LG HB405SU via ethernet. NAS is plugged into my router and so is the LGHB45SU, linking them.

I mentioned previously that I couldnt fast forward my mkv files, this I believe is because my router is not 1gb capable in terms of speed, I would need to attach a 1gb network switch and upgrade my cables to cat 6, this might be something you come across if you ever decide to venture down the Network Attached Storage route......:smashin:

Hello,

Thanks for the prompt advice. So, back to basics, I can download a blu-ray film off the internet, put it on a usb without any converting, slot it into the lg and it will just load and play?? Sounds too easy!

Thanks

David

I have the LG HB405SU and am very happy with it. However, does anyone know if it is possible to make it region free? Also, how can I connect my T.V. to the marvellous speaker system?

Hey man,

By region free you mean dvds from other countrys, I am not sure if thats possible, unless you can hack it somehow, I actually wasnt aware of any restrictions as I stream media from a hard drive......ripping digitally may be your only option for your DVDs that wont play.........

Dependong on your tv, you should be able to connect via optical cable if theres an output there, there are other options, like jacks but I am not familiar with them...........:(

I connected my lg to a humax hd pvr by optical cable, and the lg's second optical cable direct to samsung hd tv. you just have to switch back the sound channel on the remote after you've played a dvd - press one button (optical).

My LG is hooked up to the PS3 and the virgin box, so no need for anything going to the TV apart from the HD Video................volume is muted on the TV........:D

just purchased this brilliant little system ... and I am very impressed !

One question: the box gives a high frequency noise ( like a whining from a old PC CD drive ) which is a bit irritation in some situations .. is this something normal for this system ?
