Gladiator was much better on 1080i.
Anybody know of a hack for this player as well.
Its between the samsung dvd-hd850 or this one.
All its needing is a multi region hack & i'm sold !

Bought one of those yesterday, unfortunately I do not have a HDMI cable yet as the Monster cable at comet is a total rip off (1m - £89). I did have a look at the manual and could answer some questions that way if it helps.

I will post more once I've had a chance to try it out properly.

I have the LG based on the same chipset but without the HDMI so I can't comment on that part. However it is very well made, picture quality via rgb scart is excellent and s-video. Divx/xvid support is very good including packed bitstream. The firmware is good and has been dumped, hacked to add new features. I've seen the 9900H firmware has had the same treatment.

    I posted a thread similar
i also have seen it at comet, if you look at the back of the machine, under the component outs it gives all upscaling
through component no hack needed, which i need to hitch up to my hitachi 5200.
does divx and sacd, staff opend the box and there where no leads supplied, i almost bought it ,but i was there for the samsung 850.
i was looking forward to a new dvd player yesterday but i came away empty handed
as i wanted more info on the LG

chaddy did you see this at elk mill. ;)

oh if this is the DVX9900 thread can admin remove my thread with same subject [i did search for threads but nothing came up]

    well i bought one

    upscales through component

but refuses to play 720p on some original disks.
it says this in the manual

FOR 720P AND 1080I RESOLUTION ON THE COMPONENT OUT, ONLY NON-COPY PROTECTED DISKS CAN BE PLAYED BACK.
IF THE DISK IS COPY PROTECTED, IT WILL BE DISPLAYED AT 576P OR 480P

i dont know how the hacked sammy 850 through
component handles this. but if its better the LG is going back.

    first impressions

unit is slim only 35mm high
the dvd tray is flimsy and no were near child friendly
unit appears twisted as only 3 sides touch the ground at any time
it does upscale through component although i have a problem with 720p, thought it was my plasma but i found
a few dvds that would play 720p through component.

picture quality is very good even compared to media centre
through dvi-d. but is there better ie sammy hacked 850??

im not sure if this is the chip that does the upscale
as all these are dvix capable players but

reading from more sites the chip has different last two letters such as de,ge,fe.

fe chips seem to be in hdmi machines

From memory....DE is not divx certified, the rest are but the EE and FE and used mostly these days. Pioneer 470 / 575 / 585, various other LG units and many others have the mediatek chip. None of them feature upscaling so I doubt thats the upscaling chip in the DVX9900H.

Yes the mediatek chip is great for divx / xvid. LG is one of the few with firmware that supports packed bitstream.

still this 720p through component issue is bothering me

even my home movie dvds will not play 720p
on screen message invalid scan freq

i have found one dvd that will play brother bear

but i cant see any difference and doubt whether its actualy upscaling past 576p

so is this my plasma not handling all 720p and that some dvds are clever enough to down scale the 720p and 1080i
options so i dont get the invalid freq message

ok no dvd in machine i still get invalid scan freq at 720p
and the dvds i thought where upscaling at 720p are not
as if i press dvd setup the message appears. so some dvds
are i assume clever enough to ignore my upscale options
    while playing

tried this now through both component inputs on plasma

    av1= Y PB PR

    av2= Y/G PB/B PR/R
both av inputs support all upscale resolutions

i am begining to think now that leeboys scart to component
trick using an rgb enabled component in on the sammy 850 is what i need.

cheers jimmy, yeah saw it at elk mill, would have had a longer demo if it wasn't for the assistant.
I told him i was a bit of a perfectionist & that i had brought some DVD's to test.
But after only a quick look at all the dvds he turned round and said how long does it take being a perfectionist.
I got my DVDS and walked away.

The progressive component output from the scart is YPbPr not RGB (even though it comes out of the RGB pins on the scart) :D , so you can feed the 3 RCAs (from the passive splitter) into the boggo standard component input :D make sense?

sorry but the LG is now back at the store.

ive now got the sammy 850

hacked and now through component i have 576p 768p
    1080i
seems my hitachi is fussy with 720p wrong frequency. there is not much noticible difference in PQ
with both machines although i thought the LG edged it as the 850 seems a little softer.
but wife says the sammy is better. also the samsung seems better build quality

ok if you need hidef through component it has to be the hacked sammy it gives most resolutions to my hitachi plasma including 768 x 1024p it also seems to ignore the if the dvd is copy protected and still upscales.

build quality is alot better on the sammy the dvd tray is not a spring board waiting to be used by my sons toy soldiers as was the case with the LG.

where the LG lost was build quality and not upscaling copy protected disks [dont know if the same through hdmi] although that could change with a handset hack at anytime. On a plus side for the LG the PQ just edged it when it would upscale. by being slightly sharper
but that's down to personnel preference.

for me then its the Samsung 850.
even if a hack was available to improve the LG
i realy dont think i could live with the build quality.

got to say thanks to comet staff for being understanding.
as there was no quible with what i said about the LG
and an exchange was made in minutes.

Hi Jimmy, Glad you like the sammy :D I know I may go on a little  but i like people getting the best out of there equipment  , but I would seriously consider buying a scart to 3 RCA(RGB) splitter cable, and connect the component video via the scart, the image will be much much sharper trust me! Inside the sammy the Y output on the component RCA is heavily filtered by a capacitor (which I removed in my sammy), sadly done to make hdmi look far more detailed than analogue component. The Y(G) out on the scart on the otherhand isn't filtered at all, apart from the usual low-pass filter to remove out of band frequencies.

orderd one last night along with some 3m component cable
no its not £100 monster although from experience the expensive stuff does give a slight improvement say 4-5%
but does it warrent the price tag im not sure. i have been using some shorter stuff to get it up and running but the sammy needs to 2.5m away with the rest of the AV stuff.
i will have a play around when i get all the dvd kit running
if i hit a brick wall im sure you will hear from me

    cheers Lee

As I was looking for the previous Lg model (8931H) to play PB Xvid, but it seems I can't get my hand on one the se days, I'd like to know if the 9900H does play packed Bitstream Xvid as well.
    Thanks.

Good question, just the one I was about to ask too!

The next question is, where is the best price on this? Pixmania is £86 delivered. As people were getting the 8931 for around £40 I'd like it a bit cheaper!

I bought a Samsung LE32R41 (Built in Digital TV version) a few weeks ago and also bought an LG DVX9900H (from Comet). I finally bought a HDMI cable (admitidly a real cheap one) but just can't get it working. When I try it just produces a bit of Fuzz, Some Green thick lines (and green full screen?) or says Not Supported Format? (at all resolutions?)

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas as I am kinda new to all this. Could it be the cheapness of the cable?

Any help/advice would be gratefully received.

Is the samsung 950 just a black version of the 850 ?

Need a new DVD player (must be black for maximum WAF), and looking thru the manual for the 950 it states that you cannot use the component out if you have HDMI connected, this would rule out this player for me as i need to connect my lcd via HDMI, and my panny 700 by component :(

Anyone have any ideas what I could go for ?, was looking at the LG until I read this thread
