It depends more on the quality on the implementation.
The very best TVs are all direct lit, but direct lit alone doesn't mean anything.
As Sagaris mentioned I believe LG's current best LCD TVs are direct lit. But they're inferior dimming systems to last year's Sony XE93 which was Edge Lit.
And they are actually four types if you want to count full array. Direct lit with local dimming (aka FALD), Direct Lit without local dimming, Edge Lit with local dimming and Edge Lit without local dimming.
