LG CX OLED TV Owners and Discussion Thread

Thanks @chenks

So, to look out for would be any colour tinting or greyness on normal viewing? From the pics I see posted the banding issue seems to be more noticeable when running tests on the panel rather than normal viewing - is that correct? Sorry for the newbie questions - I have had my plasma for 11 years so a little rusty on what to look for and what to test!

Do I need to run any other tests in the standard or service menus?

Set the TV up, watch it - are you happy? Then forget about it. Don’t start looking for problems.

I’ve had my C8 2 years and love it. I’ve never looked for anything, what’s the point if you can’t see it in normal viewing? It’s become an obsession for some people, meticulously poring over every new panel, running tests to find things they otherwise would never have seen.

I agree @NorvernRob, if you look to hard for faults you will always find one and then never be happy.

I was more concerned about what would stand out immediately as a fault rather than trying to find them :)

Is there a simple "How to" guide for testing a new CX for banding, tinting etc and do people usually do this immediately or do you have to use the tv for a number of hours before seeing any issues?
Run to for 4 hours then turn put the tv into standby for 10 mins, repeat that 4 times so 16 hours with 10 min offs to allow the screen clear cycles to do its job.
Then the tv is run in and will not rely change after this point.
Check for tinting with full screen white test pattern.
Check for banding, dark Patches and vignetting in a dark room using 5% full filed test pattern.
You can find these test patterns on your app on the tv, use the filmmaker picture presets with oled light set at 30 for the tests.
To test for the grid effect search HDR on you tube and look at very bright scene like the sun for spotting any grid like mess effect

Here in Slovakia you can now buy by the biggest TV retailer in the country 65CX for 1439 EUR + you can get extra cashback from LG 120,- EURO?

I cant decide whether to buy 65CX or Sony 65A8H or Panasonic 65HZ1500 for 1900 EUR? If the extra 500-600 EUR by Sony or Panasonic can justified the picture and sound quality in overall?

TV should by used mainly for movies, tv shows and occasionally sport and will be placed in brightroom. TV will be on mainly at the evening and night after the work and during the day only at the weekends.

Before I had my CX I would turn off the tv at the end of the day and switch off at the wall. I learnt before getting the CX to leave it on standby for the tv to complete a short pixel refresh to help prevent burn in. How long does the quick pixel refresh take when on standby after use?

Around 7minutes, you can hear it click after completion if you want to end your day on a high 👍

If you don't see anything when watching what you normally watch then don't bother looking for it. You can just go onto YouTube and look at some 5% grey screens which can reveal banding.
Exactly what i was going to say.

Crazy that people buy a brand new TV where the technology inherently requires a certain amount of time to 'bed in', to then go immediately looking for as many faults as possible.

If you don't notice it during normal viewing, does it matter if you spot something in a pitch black room on a 5% grey slide seriously?

I have had my Cx for 2 months now, I do notice horrible grey skin tones especially during outdoor scenes or sometimes a yellowy tint, I use FILMMAKER or the dark/ bright room setting that are recommended by Rtings or other sites which are really just the same settings

I get that all the time, I'm currently watching game of thrones box set on skyQ and I would say the daylight (outside scenes) look terrible but i don't think there's anything I can do about it

Sounds like your (greyscale) is off on the TV. Or it's the content you are watching. How about the motion settings, do you have them shut off? as this can dim the image. Home cinema recommends for a good image to assess skin tones, pause a BD of Casino Royale at around 00:25:53 after James Bond steps down from the plane – Daniel Craig's face should appear natural. What colour temperature mode do you use? Do you have your colour set to 50? Colour Gamut at auto? You could try switching HD deep colour off if it is enabled for cable TV. Do you have AI brightness off? What ever you do, do not tweak any of the white balance settings without a meter - or copy anyone's white balance settings - you will mess up the greyscale. You should only be tweaking the colour temperature. Can you upload a photo with your picture settings.

Agree with Chenks in that most cases where people are moaning about the content it is generally source based. If you've still got issues with a 4K disk then something may need tweaking

You cant polish a turd..

Motion settings will be at default for bright and dark room modes as I only changed OLED LIGHT , colour 50 yes assume defaults on those picture modes are warm 2 AI brightness I have never touched so should be off. I have deep colour enabled for my sky box

I try ignore it but difficult if your watching dailly and see it, its probably the source as you say

It is the source from sky, sky q HD quality is sometimes great but sometimes poor.
Yep magnum PI looks great on skyQ but other things don't look so good , mostly I just record stuff on it to watch later then watch something on prime, or Netflix.. i tried skyQ Netflix for the first time yesterday on the Q box app and its nowhere near as good as the LG tv app

Yeah I use Netflix via the TV app as it's much better quality same with Disney+ and prime I find.

in theory it should be no different, as the source is the same.
where you may see a difference is what device is "providing" the content. it's possible the sky box is doing something the image as it sends it to your TV.

or it's possible the HDMI source settings on the TV for the sky box are different to what you have set when using the native apps.

as mentioned above, the "quality" should be no different at the source is the same regardless of what device you are getting it from.

It may be because we get Dolby vision through TV app and not on sky q Netflix app

Yeah I have those on the tv apps too, i don't think skyQ apps have dolby vision or atmos ..the Netflix one gives 4k hdr cos was trying it yesterday. I have free premium on skyQ and a different premium account on the tv app

I did look at that yesterday, for the 4k hdr series another life the picture mode went to standard instead of cinema home whicn is the tv app default for that show but the picture quality wasn't as good as on the tv app

for SDR & HDR, it's recommended to use FILMMAKER mode
Cinema Home (or Cinema) is for DV
Standard is defintely not right.

also, it's recommended for turn off DTM for HDR modes.

remember, for each source (HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, HDMI4 and native) you need to set up the picture settings for each one individually, and for each source you need to do it 3 times (SDR, HDR and DV).

unfortunately there is no "apply to all" option.
well there is, but it doesn't do what you'd think it does.

Thanks i didnt know this, for the tv apps I just let them use what the app sets them to, have noticed prime uses standard a lot. For skyQ its just at dark room but had it at filmmaker for a while too.only the Netflix skyQ app has HDR on my box
