LG confirms 200 OLED TV sales, says it expects 'mainstream' pricing in 2-3 years

More substantial sales expected in 2013

It's only been on sale in Korea for a couple of months but sales of only 200 units, so far, is hardly an awe inspiring start for LG's 55-inch OLED TV but then we guess not many have £10,000 to spare on a TV.

The LG 55EM970V OLED TV went up for pre-order in January and on sale in February when it had already garnered 100 pre-orders.

"Our OLED products went on sale about two months ago in Korea and to date we have sold about 200 units," said Hugo Shin, Director of Home Entertainment product communications at LG.

Despite the relatively slow start, LG is naturally bullish about the future of OLED and the company see it as a key technology in their quest to overtake a certain other Korean manufacturer at the top of the consumer electronics business.

Naturally it's the price, brought about by very low yields in manufacturing, that will be the stumbling block for many but Shin believes it will be at more mainstream levels in 2-3 years.

"That could change," said Shin at a briefing today we were at earlier today, "if our competitors create more competition in the market, in which case it could be two years, but three years is more realistic."

Although that's not a particularly lengthy time frame, it's going to feel like a long wait to some.

Didnt George Michael buy 2 of these ?

I thats the average cliental ( and at £10k a pop it will be) then 2-3 years mainstream pricing may be way off seeing how low it would need to cost.
