Just acquired this monster 86 TV which works fine but surprised it does not support TEXT for BBC channels.

LG say TEXT is no longer used but this is nonsense as The BBC say TEXT is for use without the internet and iplayer with the internet.

Am I being fobbed off by LG?

The old style 'analogue' Ceefax (and Oracle) teletext service ceased on Tuesday 23 October 2012. It's all digital now but even this is changing.

The BBC currently offer two digital information services via DVB-T/T2. Their original 'red button' service (typically transmitted via BBC One and Two) can be found by pressing the 'TEXT' button on your remote control. Their new 'red button' service (which is internet based) can be found by pressing the 'red button'.

Edit: For more info look here: BBC Red Button - Wikipedia

    Cheers

    Thanks

It's the 'TEXT' button that does not work. The TV says 'This function is not available'

Surely LG are premature in removing this functionality?

You have to be viewing either BBC One or Two. And have to wait for the 'red button' to appear!

Agreed. That's exactly how it works on my other TVs but on the new LG on BBC One or Two when the 'red button' appears and I press the 'TEXT' key on the remote I get the message 'This function is not available' and via the LG support phone line they told me that technical support say 'It does not work' as there is no text anymore only the red button for internet services!!!!!!!

    Surely this is twaddle?

I can confirm that both versions of the BBC's 'red button' service are working fine on my 2016 and 2017 webOS based LG televisions...

So what should I do about this?

Support at LG say they have no idea why it does not work. Whereas LG technical tell them the service is no longer available.

Support said I cannot speak to technical so I asked for a complaints contact and was given

    [email protected]

    Any ideas?

I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask other UK 2018 LG television owners if they can access the original BBC 'red button' text service...

But some of us prefer the non internet based 'Original' red button service ;)

Whats the TV like apart from teletext not working/on it? Picture quality? Refresh rates? (Cant confirm what the rates are - is it 60 or 120?

Considering getting one but cant find any store with a display unit for demo - no reviews at all available on the net or youtube, so scratching my head on what to do.

Not keen on the metallic frame - black always looks best personally. How does it look in reality?

Lot cheaper for this screen in Europe - can find it approx. £1000 cheaper :(

The picture of the LG is very good for detail and blacks are great but overall I find the picture a bit on the dim side rather than the bright I was expecting. It's more like the working Pioneer 65" Kuro I have just put in the garage until I know what to do with it???!!
I replaced the Kuro with a 75" Samsung(not 4K) which is still working fine but is not 4K so is now in the bedroom.

Regarding the text on the LG I found that by disconnecting the Ethernet cable the text works!

Can't find any menus to change any parameters. Must be somewhere?

Buying from the grey market can be very beneficial financially with few problems if you buy a quality product. Make sure it has the UK spec.

Managed to get old school text working on 2018 LG tv.
    1) disable HbbTV (settings / all settings / programmes / HbbTV/ Auto Start OFF).
    2) power off tv (via tv full off, not on remote for standby).
    3) turn on tv. Put on BBC either SD or HD channel. Wait 10 seconds or so for the green restart programme pop up - indicates text now ready.
    4) press text.
    5) if you press the Red Button it all stops working until you put TV in standby and restart it.
    6) to get red button functionality back, turn HbbTV back on. Turn off TV power at TV. Restart and you now have red button functions, but no old school teletext.

I know this thread is almost a year old but did you ever manage to get the TEXT working at all?

I've got the same problem and got the same answers from LG support telling me LG televisions do not have Teletext. Having said that, a number of other similar LG sets have TEXT working quite well.
