Does anybody know if this early outing by Tom Cruise (a legend in later life hinself...) has had a decent release?
Saw it on Sky the other day and their print is the worse for wear...

I did a quick search for Legend in Google and this is what came up:

    Legend (1985)
    Also Known As:
Legend of Darkness (1984) (UK) (working title)
Legend: Ultimate Edition (2002) (USA) (reissue title (video title))
    Runtime: 94 min / USA:114 min (director's cut) / USA:89 min

So it looks like there was a newer release of Legend just 2 years ago.

Not sure what difference there is between Legend: Ultimate Edition and Legend though...

I looked at this a while ago. I think the R1 Ultimate release is the best, longer runtime for one. I may be confused though :)

The longer runtime is down to the framerate on NTSC discs...Legend isn't the only disc to suffer this...all NTSC discs will appear to be longer than their R2 counterparts due to framerates.
    Legend.

I have to say Army Bloke, I'm surprised a man like you would even be interested in a film like Legend.
Even the Legend: Ultimate Edition is nothing to shout about.

I know Tom Cruise is rated as a legend in his own mind but Legend is not one of his better efforts.

Ah - but it's pre Top Gun Cruise - which is the film that made him a legend in his own mind...
I believe it's also an early Ron Howard picture, who directed Apollo 13, a movie about 3 astronauts who were real living legends...

That's true, those pioneers of early space flight truly deserve legendary status.
Ah, Happy Days, another legendary TV sitcom which spawned the legend that is Fonsie...

    P.S. Do quotes count? :D

No......I'm aware of the NTSC/PAL difference. Have a look at Brogan's initial post:

    Runtime: 94 min / USA:114 min (director's cut) / USA:89 min

I *think* the Ultimate edition is the only one with the Director's cut:

    Taken from here

Ridley Scott directed and some of the photography is absolutely fantastic considering their budget.
I also quite dig the fairy who I actually auditioned in later life and she was a total nutball!
Mia Sara is pretty fine looking too especially when she takes a turn for the worse!

I have this DVD, its an excellent collectors edition, i would give the picture 7 out of 10, it can be soft in certain shots but i believe it was filmed that way because of the fantasy elements, the directors cut has a DTS track, the original cinema version which is much shorter has only a Dolby track but also features an isolated music score, the directors cut features a Ridley Scott commentary ( anyone who knows commentaries knows Ridleys are the best in the business ) personally i like this film but it might be an acquired taste, the packaging is very nice and if its going cheap then what have you got to lose, buy it :)

Mia Sara used to live just up the road from me with Jason Connery and they used to be seen doing their shopping in Galashiels.

Don’t forget there are two versions of this film one with the Jerry Goldsmith score :smashin: and one with Tangerine Dream. The version shown in the UK cinemas was Jerry’s but subsequent showings on UK terrestrial have all had the Tangerine Dream score :thumbsdow .

There are currently 3 different versions of Legend available on DVD - 2 being on the already mentioned R1 Ultimate Edition and another on the UK R2 release.

The R2 version is the original cut of the film we got in UK cinema's and on home video, complete with Jerry Goldsmith score.

The R1 'Ultimate' contains the shorter original US cinema release with the Tangerine Dream score + the recent Dir Cut which is the longest, most complete version of the film. This Dir Cut also has the Goldsmith score and is, IMHO, the best version of the movie. It's also a very good S.E. DVD with a great commentary track from Mr Scott and an excellent documentary.

The R1 is definitely the one to go for, but if you're a Ridley Scott completist the R2 can be picked up quite cheaply.

Interesting to compare the different cuts of this film - for example, there is a fair amount of footage used in the US cut (even though it's the shortest) that doesn't appear in the other versions. Pity we don't have the same choice with BladeRunner!

There are 3 versions of the film

    1) UK version with a Goldsmith Score 1hr 34mns
    2) US version with a Tangerine Dream Score (uuuuurrrgghhhhh) ; 1hr 30ms
both of these versions are horribly cut to shorten the length, this film is the main reason why Scott & Goldsmith stopped working together.
    3) Ultimate edition : The original cut (that makes sense) with the full Goldsmith score ; 1hr 54ms

note that there is over 45 mins of different footage between US and UK cuts which are mostly added to the Ultimate edition.

Agreed! Can't understand how anyone (although I know a few who do  ) can prefer this to Goldsmiths wonderful music. One of his very finest scores, I think.

Prolly worth getting the r2 aswell as it is cheap and is interesting to see the major differences between the 3 cuts, its similar to watching alien 3 workprint cuts vs theatrical.

I own the R1 ultimate edition AND prefer the Tangerine Dream score. Infact i've never watched the uncut version because I cant bring myself to listen to the Jerry Goldsmith score. So as I have 2 hours spare this afternoon I think i'll give it a try....

Well I watched the directors cut today but have to say i still prefer the Tangerine Dream score. It might be because its the music I associate with the film or personal taste but to me it just matches the kind of dreamy on screen action.

Right, off to watch Chronicles off Riddick! Hope it's as good as it looks...
