Hello everyone, I have a 5050 rgb led strip around my tv but the plug is moulded on with no fuse so I wanted to know if it needs to be fused and if so what rating? The other end is an IEC connector so was just going to buy the cable and put the correct fuse in.

    Thanks

Buy a lead with 0.75mm2 csa (cross sectional area) copper = 6A rating. It should have 0.75mm printed on the outer sleeving. Fit a 3A fuse or 5A max in the mains plug. Un-fused plugs are illegal and are a real fire hazard. Try CPC.

SMD5050 RGB LED strips have a power consumption of 7.2Watt per meter (30 LEDs per meter version) or 14.4Watt (60 LEDs per meter version) but should use twice the real power for your calculations because of the surge currents. I would say that no more than 3A !

Thanks for that, my CPC order arrived today so I will be changing the plug over the weekend.

This contributor is talking about the 12V DC current not the 240V AC current - a factor of 240/12 = 20 difference.

Still same rules apply (P=IxV) I offered the wattage for both versions of SMD5050 RGB LED strips per meter is there anything wrong with that? :)

Nothing wrong with that - you just missed the question.

    A 12V 5m reel of 60/m will need 14.4W/m x 6m = 72W = 6A at 12V DC. A 100% efficient switched mode power supply 240V input will need I=P/V = 72W/240V = 0.3A - so a 3A fuse is perfectly suitable when using 6A cable. Most switched mode psu's are around 85% efficient so the actual mains current will be 0.3A / 0.85 = 0.35A.

Most 60/m strips don't pull anywhere near 72W because of resistance losses down the strip - 4A-4.5A is typical from the 6 quality suppliers I use. End of lesson.

Yes exactly as I said before P=IxV :)
