If you have Eco on you can still welly it by pushing the accelerator all the way to the floor. Not sure how to describe it but when you push the accelerator all the way down there is about an inch further if you push harder.

This will give you the full power even if in eco.

I recently switched to driving with Eco on to see how much it affected my performance. Bugger all is the answer. I get about 3.4 miles per kW using eco, 3.3 without. And driving with it off is so much more fun!

I was going to suggest you tried it out on your 70mph blast to test battery life IG :)

Performance-wise, our Leaf has far more acceleration than our previous 2009 Auris (1.33vvti) at all speeds, including motorway. And that's constantly using eco mode. It's nippier than any other car I've owned as well. I know it won't be comparable to a top of the range bmw or sports cars, but it's not designed to be. It will be nippier than most comparatively sized cars, particularly those priced £17k new.

I can't imagine a single situation that being able to accelerate any quicker would be safer, unless I'd made a drastic mistake in the first place.

As for top speed, I stopped pushing it when I got up to 95 on the dash.

If you're travelling at 70 - 75 mph on the motorway and put your foot down temporarily to to get out of trouble, what is the acceleration like?

Slow, a little sluggish, nippy, or still lots of ompff?

How have you measured the acceleration? Some sort of GPS?

More or less the same as all other speeds >40mph, which really surprised me when I first did it

to give something a bit more comparable - it's quicker than the Auris would have been dropping into 3rd or 4th and accelerating hard (without the time required to change gear, nor the incredible noise of hitting 6k rpm)

I just looked up the specs, the Auris had 95 bhp (peak-only), the Leaf has 110 (most of the time), so it's not surprising.

Damn you guys! My interest in Leaf 2 is increasing all the time. I'm really looking forward to the New Year (supposedly coming end of Jan/Feb over here) to take one for a spin.

Ioniq defaults to ECO mode on start up, you can then toggle drive modes to normal and sport. ECO is fine in urban day to day, normal when less traffic and sport is like someone doubled the power you can access. In sport it isn't a gti but enough for half decent B road blast.

At the same time, it has 3 levels of braking regen. You have 2 paddle shifters on the steering wheel that you can use to increase or decrease instantly. This is good if like me you live in South Bucks and have hills where level 3 is great and keeps speeds below 30 and puts a load of whack into the battery. Leave on level 1 if wanting to blast on lanes and want to feel like a normal ICE car.

Ioniq also gives better miles per kwh based on what you guys are saying about Gen 1 Nissan Leaf.

I have had a few days with a Leaf on separate occasions now and the only other car that I have had as much fun in was a MX5.

I am seriously thinking of getting one but am very concerned about my licence, I just cannot resist driving like a boy racer from the lights and around town

I will say one negative thing about the Leaf that I hope they sort with the new one - the paint is terrible quality. Over the years, we've never chipped the paint on our cars before from day to day use (and we moved house several times, including many many trips to the tip), only noticeable things like micro scratches in the door handle well.

In the four day test drive with the metallic paint, I managed to have a shotgun effect of large stone chips (about six) on the front bumper after driving slowly through roadworks. Now two weeks of owning ours with the standard red paint, we've got one scratch through to the metal from putting the car seat in (I barely knocked it against the paint). Then today, my wife had put her keys on the rear seat and knocked them off, which has chipped the paint through to the metal, from about a 20cm drop.

God knows what it's going to be like after 3 years and 60k miles!

I think I mentioned ours needed work on the paint before we even collected it, also in red. This was a "car park scrape" though, but we have been paranoid about it since. Google "Nissan paint quality" and I don't think it's confined to the Leaf.

Ooh thanks for that. If it's gonna that soft, if I do go for one, I'll get it Crystal Serum protected; I know a dealer in Lincoln as he worked on my existing car. Stunning stuff. So something to consider in purchase costing there.

    Cheers.

We were invited to a Launch event on the 15th (A Wednesday), we didn't go. 6 months into a 3 year PCP, no chance :)

Shame. I might have to contact the dealer. I actually really like the look of the new shape.

Thanks for that, a good first-look overview - informative and to the point.

Looking forward to a proper test drive of the UK Leaf version 2.

10000 pre orders for the new leaf , and that's despite them not hitting dealers floors yet , sounds like a canny take up already , had a close up look at one the other day and it looks way better than the outgoing model !!!

Well the demos are arriving. A transporter was spotted in Dublin this morning with 9 Leafs on board and a few places have hit social media with pictures.

My nearest dealer in Ireland says they won' have theirs til March but Coleraine in Northern Ireland got theirs yesterday. I'll head up there soon for a test drive.

Well I’ve ordered a New Leaf Tekna Flame Red with Pro Park assist, should hopefully have it towards the end of March.

That gives me plenty of time to get the drive finished and charger installed.

Genuinely excited about thus car, first time in ages tbh

There was an advert on the TV last night and I wasn't really paying that much attention, only right at the end did I realise it was for the Leaf II (but I do have a bad cold ;))
