Hi,

I'm getting a carpenter in to build shelves across the whole front wall of our living room. Here's the design, measurements etc.

Would love feedback/advice from this group about L & R and the 2 Atmos speakers placement in particular. Are they too far to the left/right given this is almost 5m wide? Are the Atmos speakers too high?

Seating position is 3.5m in front of this.

Thanks,

Pete

L & R speakers are Monitor Audio Radius 90, Atmos are Elac debut 4.2 upfiring

If you are using them in the upfiring position then you are simply far too high. The recommendation is not to have them set any higher than 50% of the height of the ceiling.

Thanks Gibbsy. Will measure up and see where on the shelves they should fit. Any opinion on the ideal distance from left to right (on both L&R and Atmos)?

The recommendation for using upfiring speakers is to have on top of or as near as possible to the front left and right speaker. If you cannot achieve that then slightly inside of them should be fine.

That should be doable, thanks

Re left to right distance. Left and right speakers will be about 4.7m apart. Does that sound ok or are there any beat practices here?

That seems a long way apart unless you're having a big screen and need to sit 4m from it. Where you are sitting think of a triangle, the left and right should be the same distance from you as they are apart.

Worth having a look at this guide.

Thanks, appreciate it 👍

Good note on the "triangle" method - if the listening position (eg your head) is 3.5m from the front edge of the shelves (and therefore front edge of the speakers), then the L/R speakers should be ~4m apart, so you could move them inwards by ~40cm each.

But it's probably close enough that they'll work in the position drawn, just make sure they're angled in slightly. It should be easy enough to try with them at various positions on the shelf & see what sounds best.

As per above comment, the upfiring speakers are designed to go close to the L/R but firing up - alternative might be to mount them high, but facing down towards the listening position, though I'm not sure if the Elac are designed to be used this way.
