    Hi,

firstly let me preface this with a) I'm not seeking the holy grail of home cinema, just functional, and b) I'm an idiot/novice, depending on your personal opinion.

I brought a Sony KDL-32V4000 tv, and a new laptop, an Asus X59SL-AP338C.

I've got a HDMI / DVI cable, and ta-da I can see the laptop screen on the tv screen (setting HDMI 3). So far, so good.

Now the sound part... I've got 3.5mm Jack to 2 x RCA Phono Audio Cable Gold 5m Lead. I plugged the jack into the laptop's headphone, and the two RCAs into the back of the tv, into the points marked 'Hi Fi Audio Equipment', given that they were the same colours as the RCA knobs. No sound, so not so good.

Next attempt was to plug the RCAs into the points marked 'Mono L & R'. Still no sound.

    Things I have checked;

    • all the other component knob holes
    • pulling the jack out of the laptop to ensure there is actually sound
    • testing headphones in the jackpoint so I know sound broadcasts out of the jackpoint

The boyfriend's suggestion is we give up, and buy some computer speakers to put beside the tv, but it makes a mockery of the whole set up.

I know I'm quite probably doing something stupidly wrong, but if someone has the patience to help me using words of two syllables (as I know nothing about this stuff), I'd be grateful.

PS should also point out I've tried three different cables, without success, so I don't believe its a fault with the RCA cable

Just had a quick look through the manual... got it on line as I don't have this TV, anyay connect the HDMI lead to HDMI 3, for sound you will need a 3.5mm - 3.5mm cable and you plug this into the 3.5mm input (looking directly at the back of the TV) to the right of the VGA input.

    Hi Curly

I've got the HDMI in HDMI3, and its definitely working; I select the HDMI3 channel on the remote, and hey presto, I can see the computer screen.

I don't have VGA, just the DVI, which is apparently the upgraded version.

The laptop manual states I should use a 3.5mm RCA jack to connect to the tv for sound, and thats what I thought I'd achieved by plugging the jack into the laptop, and trying the three L / R connectors on the tv.

    Any other suggestions?

thanks very much for your input

is there not a 3.5mm input next to the DVI/vga input on the tv, the manual clearly showed that the TV's HDMI input and the VGA input both shared the same 3.5mm input for sound, perhaps it's the same for the DVI input on the TV.

Hmmm didn't think that there could be a 3.5mm to a 3.5mm connection - shall go to Maplin and buy another cable, and let you know how I go

thanks for your input - very much appreciated!
