Who's betting that it's a senior international banker arrested on a rape charge.

Seriously this story reads like an SVU script at the moment.

probably be one of the eps, dunno about first as it's 4ish months away and there might be saucier stuff to rip from the headlines

Criminal Intent got in quick with a Charlie Sheen inspired episode to open its final season a fortnight ago

Hi,

To be fair to SVU, and even its older (now cancelled) sibling, L&O, they've always done a lot of topical stories, right from day one: some mirror the real news stories more closely than others.

However, for me, I'm more shocked at reading that Christopher Meloni isn't back, and that BD Wong has now left! Both were great characters and actors, but I can see that BD Wong's character was sorely under-used in recent seasons, which is a shame, as "Oz" proved he can do some great work!

Will be interesting to see what happens with Munch as well, as he's getting older and older, and his character is appearing less-and-less also! :(

that's been the franchise's unofficial tagline ... 'ripped from the headlines'
- even the UK version's most recent ep though adapted from an old US episode definitely had shades of Baby P

Munch still appears a lot, Capt Cragen appeared a lot less last season (and he was one of the original characters of the mothership L&O, before being replaced by Lt Van Buren)

Wong's departure is new news, Meloni's not so new, contract renegotiations fell through. Hargitay was also going to be leaving (Benson promoted) and just guesting in a few eps, but they obviously persuaded her to stay the whole season in light of CM's departure.

All in all though, the US franchise is virtually dead now
- with L&O and CI both now over, L&O: LA cancelled, and the disruption with SVU, it's not looking too healthy

Richard Belzer's Sergeant John Munch has retired from SVU (expected to make recurring appearances as DA Special Investigator)
Belzer's run ties with Kelsey Grammer as Dr. Frasier Crane and James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke" for longest portrayal of a single character on TV, the breadth of Belzer's apparances sets him in a league of his own.
Munch has become the only fictional character, played by a single actor, to appear on ten different television shows. These shows were on five different networks: NBC (Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and 30 Rock); Fox (The X-Files and Arrested Development); UPN (The Beat); HBO (The Wire) and ABC (Jimmy Kimmel Live!). Munch has been one of the few television characters to cross genres, appearing not only in crime drama series, but sitcom (Arrested Development), late night comedy (Jimmy Kimmel Live!) and horror and science fiction (The X-Files). He has played a role in international television series, beginning with UK crime drama Luther where he is mentioned as an American contact for the series' Serious Crime Unit (SCU). Notably Luther stars Idris Elba, the actor who played Stringer Bell in the HBO drama The Wire where Munch previously cameoed.
This is the uncut roast from his retirement party which featured only partially on the last episode of SVU, with a cameo from Clark Johnson as Meldrick Lewis (Homicide: Life on the Street) ...

Where's the unaired episode from last season? Pulled because of similarities to the Pussy Grabber In Chief, and then covered satirically in The Good Fight, referred to as 'one of those Chicago shows' iirc :D.

Law & Order: SVU has been on for an incredible 19 years, and because of that Mariska Hargitay has had an opportunity over time to speak with many survivors of domestic violence. Within that span of time she’s underwent a transformation of her own, started the Joyful Heart Foundation, and really understood perhaps more than anyone else in entertainment that the impact that one television show and character can have on a larger world.
