Sorry for my delay in posting replies - just back from a hectic couple of days at the Hong Kong electronics show, looking at next year's goodies. Anyway, here goes:

STRDB1080/DVPNS705 - unlikely to be running them for the next month or so, as we currently have deals on the similar STRDB1070 at £299, and the DVPNS700 at £199 multi-region.

Plymouth store - thanks, will pass comments on to our design team.

Projectors - we have dabbled a little over the last few months with some Dreamvision, Sanyo and Sony, but have found very little interest. Prefer to concentrate on plasma, which is about to go mainstream.

B&W - you might think that, I couldn't possibly comment ;)

Paradigm - RS remains the exclusive UK distributor, however, we have had limited success in selling their range of regular speakers, other than subs. I'm open-minded, and will continue to monitor the situation, and will be very happy to sell any range they produce which proves commercially viable in the UK.

Cheers,
Nick

I am trying to buy a Toshiba Plasma and I just wanted to tell you how hard its been.

First of all, I tried ringing your central mail order number.. On several separate occasions its rung for over 20 mins, so I gave up.

Then I sent a mail to the 'sales' address.. Just asking about stock, availability and how I could buy one...

Again, no reply.

Then I rang Cardiff and was told that there were 8 in the warehouse and I should come in and pay in full. Pay in full I questioned... Yes I was told.. As they are in stock, I have to pay the full amount.

Minutes later, I read a post on this forum saying that someone had got through to mail order line and there were none in stock.

I rang Cardiff again, and told them what I had read and was told that I was wrong. The computer showed 8 and if I payed in full, I should get one.

I explained that I was nervous about handing over £3k for an item that might not be available.

I went on to say that as its an obsolete product which is under high demand, I have concerns about stock levels and whether I would ever be able to get one.

I was asked "Who said they were obsolete?" and "Who said they were in demand?". I should just pay my money, wait and see if they can get stock and them come back for a refund if they can't.

I then escallated this to the manager, who was slightly more helpful.

He still told me that I should pay up front. I have no problem with this, but I wanted to find out whether I had the slightest chance of getting one first.

He reluctantly, rang the warehouse and confirmed that there was 8 but there had been a lot of interest.

I explained that I was unhappy travelling to Cardiff (on a Saturday), paying £3000 for an item whicih might not be in stock and possibly never will be. Waiting for a bit.. Finding out that there wasn't stock, so going back and gettimg my money back.

Its not the sort of service that I expect when I am pay £3000 for something.

He then said that he would place an order WITHOUT payment up front (which was nice of him) and would call me today (Monday) to tell me whether I was successful.

Its now 4:30 and I have heard nothing. So I called them.

More worryingly, this information about there being 8 in the warehouse contradicts what Nick stated on the 9th. Nick knew that all the stock was taken with back-orders on the 9th, but Cardiff (and the warehouse people he spoke too) still said that there was stock on the 11th.

Anyway, I just had a return call from the manager. He was unsuccessful in placing my order (good job I didn't travel down to Cardiff to pay my £3000), but would try again next time they showed stock.

I am now told that he can only place an order for me, when the warehouse shows a delivery date. I can't place a back order..

He is going to keep an eye on the stock levels and when a delivery date appears, try and order me one.. But I don't like this 'try' thing.

What if he is out of the office.. Sick.. Leave.. What ever... This shouldn't be a manual process. I just want to order a Plasma.. I want to pay a deposit which guarantees that I will get one (Should new stocks arrive). It should be easy.

I have been told that "due to a new computer system" I can't place a 'pre-order'. I have to wait until stocks are in (or due in) the warehouse before the system will let them be ordered.

So, say 10 come in.. there are 50 shops and I bet that each shop has atleast 1 person (on average) interested in buying one. Its going to be hit and miss whether he gets in there first.

I am also tempted by the new Pansonic W5. After all, £300 more for the new model is temping. We know that these are out of stock.. So I asked how could I order one of those.. Again, as they are out of stock too, I can't place an order for one. I have to wait until they are due.

This whole situation seems mad. I just want to buy a Plasma.. Surely this is fundimentally how retail works. I place and order and I get one.. Cardiff can't help.. The sales email address has returned nothing.. Nick.. Can you do anything for me.

I have spent too much time on this.. It hardly seems worth the effort. Perhaps I should give up, pay slightly more and go to someone who has stock.

Talking of Toshibas.

two collegues here at work want a Tosh 220E multi region from Leeds.

Oops we only seem to have Region 2 try again later.

They're not happy bunnies either

Jon, I am in the same boat as you, I have been reading your comments and questions over the past few weeks with interest.
I too am wanting the Toshiba plasma from Richer Sounds so 2 weeks ago I rang the Hull branch and ordered mine over the telephone (paid 10% deposit) and stated I would collect when it was in stock (rather than pay an extra £60 for delivery).
I was informed at the time that there was stock in the warehouse showing on the computer so should be waiting no longer than 10 days for a call to say it was ready for collection.
I rang Hull branch the middle of last week and was informed that it hadn't arrived so because I had waited over 10 days a courier would be contacted to collect it from the warehouse and take it to Hull.
This did not happen and today I received a message on my answer machine from 'a member of staff' at Hull stating that due to a new computer ordering system having been recently installed my order hadn't gone through !!
However there was stock showing on the computer, in the warehouse !! and I could have one delivered to my home address in Doncaster for £100 !!!
I rang the store back and reminded them that I had told them 2 weeks ago that I did not want to pay for the delivery option, I would collect it, they have promised me it will be at the store by friday, we shall see .....
What makes me mad is that I am waiting to move into a newly built house, I want the TV installed before the carpets go down because of the mess and to hide the wires etc. so this delay is adding to the stress of moving.
If it isn't here by friday I'm afraid I will have no alternative but to cancel with Richer Sounds and look elsewhere, I'm sure if we look hard enough we'll find the Panasonic 42" for £3100, available for immediate despatch !!! Good luck .....

Indeed. The staff at Cardiff have already reminded me that they are offering a £5000 item for £3000 and ask such, I can't expect the service that other stores offer.

They don't seem to realise that whilst £5k might be the official price, £3500 is more realistic... When you think that you are saving £500 but getting poor service, its not such a bargain after all.

When you also consider that my local (expensive) Panasonic centre is offering the new W5 for £3600, the £3300 that R.S is charging is even less of a bargin.. especially when you can't order one.

My big worry is that from next Monday, I am TV less.. John Lewis are taking away my TV, as I asked them for a refund when I leared that R.S. have stock of the Toshiba.

It seems that I am going to be watching a 14" portable for a while, until I am able to source my Plasma.

Jon/Foxmeister,

Sorry about the problems you have experienced at our stores trying to obtain a Toshiba plasma, and thanks for your constructive comments.

The Toshibas have been an especially popular line for us, and I have to say, an unexpected one. As you will guess, plasma has been a learning curve for us, along with many other retailers, as the product moves from the specialist commercial/installation market into the domestic arena.

As such, it has been difficult for me as a buyer to gauge demand with any level of accuracy, and, as we're talking several thousand pounds a box here, and not £50 CD players, I can't afford to get it wrong!

Following your comments about the allocation of stock, I am working with my Distribution Director to set up an improved system for fairer apportioning of products to stores, especially on lines which are finite in supply, such as the Toshibas. This will result in a "first come, first serve" system, which is fair to all.

We have had a total of nearly 200pcs of the Tosh, and I have just heard that we are expecting a final small quantity to arrive later this week, so I have reserved one for you. Please email me if this is OK.

As always, we are at the mercy of the suppliers when it comes to supplying stock, and Panasonic have told us not to expect any more PW5 before the end of the month.

The good news is that we have over 2000pcs of various plasma models confirmed for delivery between now and Christmas, so there shouldn't be an overall shortage - the other thing to bear in mind if you miss out on a particular deal is that there will always be another one around the corner, and in the price-eroding world of new technology, it's likely to be better and cheaper. ;)

Sorry if this comes over as a bit garbled - I'm at home now having a beer.

:p

Cheers,
Nick

In answer to an earlier point:

SD220 multi-region - these have been short for the last week or two. We are expecting a large quantity to arrive next week, and from then on, they should be in plentiful supply right through the season.

BTW, if any of you want to know the scoop on what's new from the HK show which finished today, here goes: (don't forget that we're referring to OEM/ODM factories manufacturing for brands like Wharfedale, Acoustic Solutions, Limit, Lecson, etc., and not the big names)

Budget DVD - I expect to see players retailing for less than £50 by Q2 2003.

Progscan - many players will have this at less than £150 by Q1.

DVD-A - there will be players available at less than £200 very soon.

DVD-R - conspicuous by its absence, the factories can no longer afford to produce now, worry about licences later after the recent DVD fiasco. This seems to me like a golden opportunity for Philips/Pioneer/Panasonic to do a JVC/VHS by reducing their licence fee down to a small amount (sub $10), thereby almost guaranteeing victory for their DVD-R format, and V2000/Betamax-like oblivion for the rest.

Portable DVD - expect to see models with screens between 5" and 7" at less than £300 by Q2.

Plasma - absolutely nothing, in fact the factories are quoting prices higher than RS are retailing them for in the UK! Apparently, all the own-name screens are badged Samsungs and LGs. One factory wanted to buy LGs from me, as they were cheaper than they could source them direct from LG in Korea.

TFT panels - factories are quoting increasing prices for these in the New Year, so my advice is, if you see a bargain, buy it now, it's unlikely to be cheaper soon. I was also warned about buying panels with unknown provenance, as apparently there is a big market in used panels stripped from aircraft, POS displays, etc., and then fitted into new monitor surrounds!

MP3 - lots of new products, with ever-increasing capacities. Expect to see MP3/CD portables well below £50 by Christmas.

Cheers,
Nick

Since Richer Sounds are getting so much publicity on the forums, you'd think they'd take a banner advert, wouldn't you ?

Richer Sounds have benefit of many forum members pointing people to them, with Mr Halliday on board, a large banner advert would be fitting.
Great to have his input.

Thank you Nick for clearing things up.

I shall forever curse the staff at your Guildford branch, who demoed me some Atoms hooked up to a full Arcam Alpha 9 rig. I think everyone in that store owned at least one pair of Paradigm speakers - they just couldn't shift them to customers.

Keep up the good work.

I would like to say that I have had nothing but positive help from your Brighton Branch of RS even though it took 10 pieces of equipment and 5 demos before I actually got a surround sound system that I was proud of!!!
In that respect your deputy manager at that location bent over backwards (not quite literally!) to assist me.....but the one annoying element....the great promise that the equipment you want will be in by Wednesday......! Then you phone up on Wednesday and guess what not there!!!
It happened when I was trying to get hold of a Yamaha 530RDS and the person I was dealing with was on holiday.....I was promised three times that it would be there on Wednesday and that there was a amp in their warehouse with my name on it!!

But when I demoed the Yamaha 530RDS I took Star Trek Insurrection DVD with me and had all the RS team in there for about ten minutes watching it with me!!!!!!

Nick

re your earlier thread about having no tosh plasmas in stock. I ordered and paid for one (and a wall bracket) on Friday with the Farringdon Store, phoned them yesterday and was told that it would be arriving in the store on Thursday. After reading your earlier posts I somehow get the feeling that when Thursday arrives I am going to be dissappointed...........
To be honest my main gripe here is that my expectations have not been managed by the store very well, If I was not aware of this forum I would not be aware of the information that you have posted.
If Thursday comes and all is well then I take it back, although you cant blame me for feeling somewhat pessimistic..

Hi Nick

You're a brave man to post here.

Anyway, are there any plans to improve your web site?
It's painfully slow.

Cheers

Website - yes, it's dreadful. They have been working with a new company for the last three months, and a completely new site is due to be launched in the next week or so. Brave - or foolish?

MattH - you'll need to check with the store, but we definitely have not had any deliveries of them in the last few days, so I would think that it's more likely to be next week. We have been promised a delivery into our Manchester warehouse this week, but as usual, we're completely at the mercy of our suppliers.

Banner ad - I've passed the info on to our Marketing people for their consideration.

Nick, its great to see companies using the internet in a positive way like this, and its about time you had a new site!!

Anyway I was doing my usual extremely late night browse last night and ended up on some Radio news site who said Cambrdige Audio are bringing out a new sub £150 DAB tuner soon. A quick look on the Cambridge site confirmed the details but any idea when you'll have them in stock?

Thanks!

This is excellent work, someone like nick taking time to explain all the things that he has.

Keep it going Nick.

Nick, thanks for your positive reply.
Yes if you could reserve one for me I would be eternally grateful.
It is Jodie at your Hull branch who I have been dealing with.
I might add that although he hasn't yet come through with the 'end result' he has been extremely polite.
Maybe if you could give him a quick ring to tell him that you will be reserving one for me.
Thanks again, Mr Fox ......

It is fantastic to be (hopefully) able to contact someone with the ability to give a definite and accurate answer to questions. Long may it continue. Speaking of which.............

Any sign of the Toshiba SD520E in Multiregion format or what about the revamped Mission M74i?

In anticipation,
Regards
Nick
