I got rid of my LD several years ago, along with Star Wars :(

I purchased an LD and SW again last night (from the classifieds on here) and was wondering what other titles available on Laserdisc are still Superior to the DVD edition (if a DVD edition exists)

    Star Wars Definitive original trilogy
    Star Wars Special Edition
Blade Runner - Criterion (?) or international cut?

what else is out there I should keep an eye open for?

    Frighteners
    The Killer (Criterion)
Dead Ringers (Crit) -- cheaper than OOP dvd

There are LDs of films unavailable on dvd at the moment as well, like The Holy Mountain etc.

I've owned most of these LDs and sold them for pennies when converting my collection to dvd -- I regret it SO MUCH now...

Eek. Make sure it's the Signature Special Edition and not the bog standard.

I hate to wax pessimistic but at that price it prolly isn't. I didn't know you were going to rush straight out and buy it! Now I feel all dirty and bad....

The bog standard Frighteners only had a Pro Logic soundtrack as well...there is a DD 5.1 track on the signature edition though.
As good as DVD is, IMHO, I think that laserdiscs were more collectable. Some of the cover art was to die for...things like Spawn and the Disney's spring to mind...
If you like your DTS, then there are some cracking discs out there that just aren't and never will be available on DVD...Titanic & Toy Story are just 2 that spring to mind...and we're talking REAL dts here...uncompressed full bit rate tracks that your house insurance will not pay up for...
Last Man Standing was another stonking disc IIRC...personally, I don't think there's much on the Star Wars LD's that's not gonna be on the DVD's...except, as I stated earlier, LD's are a little more collectable...espicially the NON SE edition of Star Wars, with the book and all...

I think a lot of the extras on the DE LD of Star Wars were so tatty they wouldn't dare to dump them on the dvd: it really was a masssssssive con (I bought it for the quality of the transfers only: spruced up lovely with garbage mattes etc removed and no stonking cgi).

The book that came with it was a revolting love-letter to George Lucas, and was a lazy alternative to producing proper documentation.

AND Empire Strikes Back has seven seconds missing from it (at least, the first pressing (which I bought) did).

I know what you mean about the covers etc. It's analogous to people prefering vinyl over cds because they're, you know, more tactile; I had some lovely LD boxsets (Tron, The Killer) and the dvds just don't compare -- they feel like computer games... LDs were very easy to damage, though, and warped quite easily.

    regards,
    anephric

the reason LDs were so collectable, imho was that they were so expensive. I paid £30 upwards to import my LDs, which put it out of reach for most main stream film watchers. The artwork was stupendous though.

Try more like £99-£250 for box sets (Star Wars included).

I thought I had a bargain when I paid £80 for the CAV Aliens box.

Yes, it was stupid elitism, but there was no other way to get a superior (to VHS) definition home version unless you went down the home projection (8mm or 16mm) route. (I remember my dad showing us Star Wars on 8mm back in "tha" day. The print cost him hundreds of pounds in 1980s money, and it wasn't even complete (just highlights).)

So, if you were a bit of a geek, you ended up being fleeced a lot. LDs were also more expensive to master and press (than dvds) and the end market was a lot smaller, so inevitably there was a premium to be paid.

I eventually sold my Pioneer player and around 40-60 laserdiscs (Star Wars DE, Abyss, Aliens, Tron and various Crits included) for £250.00, and I struggled to find a buyer, even at that price. I had probably spent £3000+ on them (conservative guess).

I wish I'd hung onto SW DE: I tried to get an additional £50 for it but my buyer wouldn't go for it. I remember someone offering me a fiver for it.

    Hindsight is a painful thing.

that's right, dooder. Some telecine operator configured the times wrong and hey presto!

They certainly took great care and attention with this release; about as much care went into slopping the tawdry extras together.

    £250 well spent!

Subsequent pressings corrected this, but I betcha there weren't many. You could have a replacement disc issued if you returned your faulty original to the States, but funnily enough I never did that....

Mine is correct. But it cost me £180. So I think it should be.

Heat on LD is a must. The soundtrack is awesome. The DVD 5.1 track isnt even as good as the PRO-LOGIC on LD.
