    Hi All

I've just bought a used leaf 2014 Tekna and am wondering if anyone has done a similar journey in one? specifically the Derry to Buncrana leg? is it okay to do? it's pretty hilly.
Is the local network pretty reliable? I see Buncrana has a couple of 22KW chargers which is good, I'll have to go from Buncrana over the Mamore gap which is quite the hill!
If it's too risky then we will take the other car or hire in Derry but as it's a trip we will make a few times a year it'd be nice to do it in the EV.

Also do the ferry's have charging on-board?

@DrPhil is your man for this one.

I used to use the Larne Cairnryan (PO Ferries) crossing frequently, and I'm pretty sure I've seen chargers on the car deck. Best to check with them though.

Beware the 22Kw AC Chargers.. The Leaf can only charge at 3.3Kw per hour on those as standard (6.6Kw per hour if you got the enchanced charge version), There are lots of 22Kw AC Chargers in Ireland but unless you are using a car that can make the most of high speed AC Charging you will be there for hours to get a few miles extra. (About 10 Miles Range added per hour in a 3.3 and 20 in a 6.6)

The Leaf can only charge faster than 3.3 or 6.6 per hour if you use a ChadeMo 50kw DC Rapid charger.

I believe it’s got the 6.6 looking at a picture of the dash the garage has sent me, Rapid chargers seem pretty rare in the area of Donegal I’ll be going sadly. Think there may be one or 2 in Derry but not sure.

6.6 is worth its weight in gold on a leaf. nothing worse than being stuck out in the sticks with 3.3 charger. (Paint drying and all that).

It it has the 2 charge times on the dash its a 6.6 and you are good to go.

Good Luck with the trip nothing better than an adventure to an area unknown for chargers in an EV, Keeps you awake and alert.. Enjoy the car.

If it's doable it will be once or twice a year as we would normally fly and rent a car but if taking things over to the house the car is best.
Picking it up Wednesday from Aberdeen so first drive will be just over 100 miles so will have to use rapid charger(s) should be fun :)

Oops, missed the notification from @Dony on this thread.

You're well enough stocked for fast chargers on the way. Unless you get out and push the car, you won't make it to Derry without stopping. Especially as the Glenshane Pass uphill will eat about 10% of your battery!

Stop at the Services at the bottom of the Glenshane, there is a fast charger there. If you charge to 80% there you could possibly make Buncrana but with the aforementioned Glenshane Pass hill to get up, I'd doubt it. Charge again in Derry. The fast charger is at an unmanned Maxol Station on the Glendermott Road, just about half a mile past Altnagelvin Hospital.

As for Buncrana, no there are no fast chargers in Inishowen at all. There are 2 standard chargers in Buncrana but only 1 is working I believe. There used to be one in the car park at the beach but I believe they removed it. The one in Nailor's Row is the one that works. Ferris Lane has been dead for years I believe.

If you're travelling around, the only other slow charger in Inishowen is in Carndonagh. There is a fast charger in Letterkenny if you're heading that way.

Any questions @FishDUDE, let me know. I live 10 miles from Buncrana.

Great info @DrPhil many thanks, Sounds like it should be doable especially if we get a charger installed at the house in we go to for travelling about. But only having standard might pose an issue still always good to have an excuse for food :)

Not been over yet, think it will be June or July but we may pop over next month without kids for a trial run, need to get a type 2 charger cable as we only have a granny cable just now.

@DrPhil you reminded me that I will need to sort an RFID card out for going over, is ecar the best one or are there others I should look at?

ECars from North or South of Ireland works fine. I have 4 though so I could post you one over in advance if you want.

Perfect, i’ve Already applied for the e-car card but thanks anyway, just need to find a cheap day to travel on the ferry now - prices seem ridiculous really but i think i can get a return for 150 but it’s a 30 hour return so basically one night but worth it for the kid free run. Plus I really want a burger from McGorys McGrorys, Culdaff - Restaurant Reviews, Phone Number & Photos - TripAdvisor one of the top 2 or 3 burgers I’ve ever had

Cheers, will be over in the "Summer" for a week or 2 but may fly and rent for that one, we want to come over a few times a year to get the house ready for hopefully a holiday let so it gets a bit more use, having it empty for months at a time can't be good for it without heating on etc.

    Excellent.
Is it Buncrana you have your house in? How did you end up with a house there? Family?

No it’s in leenan but that’s a place people might have heard of nearby for charging, it’s my good lady’s dads house but he stays in Derry as it’s pretty remote the house in Donegal and he’s pretty old now.

Had to go look for Leenan. This it?

    Screenshot_20180430-174518_Maps.jpg

There is a reliable charge point in Carndonagh too.

Make a point of visiting Grianan Fort too while you're in the vicinity. One of the most spectacular views in Ireland in my humble opinion.

It's at Burt, so not far from Buncrana.

Lol, even before I moved here I thought it was one of the best views in the country. Only place that beats it is parts of the Ring of Kerry.

Yeah thats the place, the road over the hill through the gap is great but I think will be quite a challenge for my little leaf. Good to know about the other charger and we all visited the fort on our last visit, the view all around is amazing and hardly any drone activity ;)

Well if you are at the Fort and walk across the grass a little in the direction of Derry, you'll find yourself looking into my back yard.

Well we are over in Donegal just now but my good lady bought a 7 seater oil burner so no leaf here :(
Saying that her car had 140 KM range this morning and leaving the house to go to Derry by the time we managed to get to the top of the manmore gap the range was showing as 60KM that’s a loss of 80KM over 5 KM so I’m not entirely sure if my little leaf would make it all the way to the nearest public charger in Buncrana although I’m sure I could get a good Regen going on the way back down.
