I've been looking forward to this title for over a year now and the time is nearly upon us. However, with the release having slipped several times and the fact that 5 days before it hits the shops I still haven't seen a single review, I'm starting to get worried that it's gonna be a pile of pants!

Has anyone seen any review online? If I snap this up on Friday, will I lose the entire weekend emersed in in Lara's world or will I spend Saturday/Sunday trying to get over the fact that the game is s**t and I've been mugged of 40 hard-earned nuggets?

Hmmmm. I think it's all a bit suspicious that the release date is so near but no-one's actually reviewed the finished game yet. Look at movies - occasionally the studios don't have any press screenings before the film comes out. This usually means the film's rubbish and they daren't show it to critics. For example - The Avengers and more recently The Hunted. Not seen the so can't comment on it's quality. The Avengers, however, is poo of the highest order.

I'm sure I'm just being paranoid and Tomb Raider will be ace.

To be honest I don't think it's anything suspicious. Anyway, I believe one of the PS2 magazines has already reviewed it.

No, it's definitely been delayed - it's now at least the end of June, but one news website (I can't remember which - I'll search for it tonight) is even suggesting it's delayed until November

And at the risk of causing controversy :D I'd suggest avoiding the first 'exclusive' reviews of any big games...

    Nope, just PS2 & PC.

By the way, I spoke to somebody at Eidos' PR co the other day, and I'm pretty sure it's going to be the end of the month.

I believe OPSM2 mag gave it 8/10. Remember the days of the PSX Tomb Raiders, they always used to score 10, but I suppose standards have risen a lot since then. Also personally I wouldn't go with what 'official' magazines say. I am/was a huge Tomb Raider fan but can't help but think that this is going to stink, I really do hope I'm wrong!

All the dates I have seen say the 27th June, seems that has been fairly settled.

Wouldnt worry about the game coming out without a review in sight, Enter the Matrix did the same and that was.......................oh hang on.

the mags that have reviewed it so far have really shown themselves up as they have been been offering opinions on pre-production code - i think a few of them reviewed last year when it should have been out.

still at least we all know which mags to avoid in future.

The review in the 'official PS2' magazine which gave it 8/10 summed it up as slow to play (that doesn't bother me, I liked the first TR best) and hard to control. Hard to control doesn't sound so good. No more direction pad, it's all analog now and leaping is supposed to be far harder. So they might well have f**ked it up. We'll see, I'm still going to buy it.

Ign gave it 4.3 out of 10 the game stinks to high heaven gameplay wise by all accounts and its a safe bet that if the official mag gives a game a good score you can take at least 2 marks off that score

Oh dear. I cancelled my pre-order. I'll get it when it's in the bargain bins. So that'll be about 2 weeks after it's released.

OK, if this game is as bad as some of the mags appear to be suggesting, why is it that the reviews on Gamespot and Amazon.com from those who have actually played the finished game are so much more positive. They don't say it is perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but most suggest it is enjoyable enough (even with a slightly unforgiving control system).

    Two options:

    1) Eidos employees are posting on sites in order to reassure the punters

    or

    2) The mags have been overly harsh due to the amount of hype and expectation surrounding this release.

Guess I'll just have to rent it and find out.

Honestly I vote for 1). I seriously doubt a punter was playing this game on the 13th Jan this year (according to amazon.co.uk) and the 'review' has zero content beyond writing out the 'features' from further up the page. I rarely trust amazon reviews for this reason - too easy for the review to be biased one way or another.

Well, I have finally cracked and cancelled my pre-order. Think I'll wait to see what PSW magazine has to say before I go splashing the cash. In my experience, if they think a game stinks then they are not shy about telling their readers.

Thanks for all of your views (you've probably saved me a few quid!)

reviews can never be trusted unless its us the public who have paid our good money for the title. reviewers who get the game for nothing are biased in the first place.

I'd use "Enter the Matrix" as an example - reviewers loved it, but most of the people i know who have played it thought it was boring, repetitive and just plan crap.

My advice, buy from somewhere you can return it too and decide for yourself what its like.

Gamespot gave a 6.4 out of 10 review, saying the control system will be resposible for more Lara deaths than her enemies :-(

Deffinately one to rent before buying.

Eurogamer.net gives it 4 out of 10 - they say the camera, combat and AI are all rubbish.

I think it's interesting that they can delay Halo 2 by a year and I think thats fine - take your time Bungie, don't rush it out, get it right. However, the moment I heard the new Tomb Raider game was delayed I immediately jumped to the conclusion that it'll be crap.

I don't think that's fair in the majority of cases. Whether I get a game for free or not has nothing to do with what score I give it, and I'd argue that the same is true for most journalists. If Tomb Raider is poor then I'll be saying so!

It certainly seems as if some of the bigger print magazines have 'obligations' to publishers, and I for one would be a bit sceptical about some of the Enter the Matrix (to use an obvious example) scores that were doing the rounds, but you should also bear in mind that personal preference is also going to influence scores, and I know some people who did genuinely like ETM. By the way, check out last month's EDGE magazine for an interesting article on bias in the industry.

Anyway, back on track. Yes, Juy 4th now. I'm still looking forward to it, and I haven't given up hope of it recreating the feel of the original, which is still one of my favourite games.

The problem with this game is they have tried to make the game different while keeping the same old control system, incorporating a RESevil, Metgear style to the old tombraider interface dont work too well.

    Still the gfx are lovelly

I think Game might be in hot water over that. Apparently some of their stores just started selling it on Wednesday!

I know plenty of indie shops often sell games a few days early 'on the sly', but it's rare for one of the big high street chains to do it. It'll be interesting to see what happens.
