laptop used as a htpc

I'm completely new to the whole HTPC thing and wondered if it would be possible to use a laptop as a HTPC.

I currently use a popcorn hour but it is on it's last legs so is going to be replaced.

However I'd prefer to spend a bit more and get a laptop if it could do what I want it to do.

The main thing I want it for is music playback, connected directly to my amp.

Also to replace the popcorn hour it would need to be able to playback 1080p m2ts files with HD audio.

Budget is around £500
