hi

i have a wireless network and my laptop is connected to it but i have a stand alone crappy pc that needs connecting but no network card. can i connect my laptop to it via a cross over cable and thus connect to the internet? the pc is in my conservatory and my router is in the main house up stairs and can't move.

If there's not a network adapter in your desktop, what are you going to plug a crossover (ethernet) cable into on the desktop machine...?

Presuming you've figured out how to overcome that hurdle, Windows has mechanisms to "bridge" the NIC's together in your laptop or you can use ICS which effectively turns the laptop into a router. It's described in the Help somewhere, look for "bridging" and "ICS."

But TBH, the cost of a NIC for a desktop PC is so low (or the order of ten pounds) I'd put a NIC in the desktop (beit ethernet or wifi) connect it direct to your router and and save yourself the hassle of going via the laptop.
