I am getting a 14 inch laptop which comes with a 1366x768 screen or I can pay £60.00 extra for a 1600 x 900 screen. Would it be worth paying to upgrade the screen? and what would the benefits be?

Everything would be smaller on the higher resolution screen, which gives you more space but makes things harder to read.

There may also be differences in screen quality (and they can sometimes be substantial) or brightness but that'll be down to the specific screens and we can't tell that from the resolution.
