My mum has asked me to find her a new laptop which needs to last her at least 3-4 years ideally. Being an Apple user myself I'm a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of options available on laptops. Have gone down to PC World to feel the build quality and unless you spend £1k they all feel a little flimsy. So seeking the suggestions of those in the know.

Heres my list of requirements:

What is your budget?
- £600, might be able to push to £650

What size laptop do you want?
- 15" (or 15.6")

Do you have resolution requirements?
- Something around 1680x1050 or even 2880x1800 (this might be pushing it)

Do you prefer a matte or glossy (reflective) screen?
- Either

What will you be using the laptop for?
- Browsing
- Skype
- Some photo editing but nothing serious
- Remote working (RDP)

How long does the battery need to last?
- Hour, not a major concern

Does it need to be portable?
- Will live on the desk most of the time connected to a monitor/keyboard
- 15.6" is more than portable

Do you require Blu-Ray?
- No

Do you require HDMI output?
- Yes

Do you have a preferred brand?
- HP seemed the best in terms of build quality at PC World

Would you be happy with a refurbished laptop?
- No

Any other details you feel necessary...
- SSD with 256GB storage
- HDMI output
- At least one standard USB 3 socket
- Windows 10
- I'd like to see minimum i5 and 8GB RAM as this thing needs to still perform in a few years!
