Hi I have a toshiba laptop that my girlfriend cleaned whilst it was on and now alot of the characters are typing incorrectly. I assume it's something to do with numlock or something but I can't get it to return to normal.

    Any help appreciated

    Try alt+shift.

That switches between installed keyboard layouts. You can disable it by uninstalling all layouts except the one you use.

If it is the num lock then you usually turn it off on a laptop by holding down the Fn key then pressing the num lock one
