Laptop connection to LCD

I have been fiddling for a bit trying to get my tv and laptop connected without any joy. I have a Mesh laptop with vista and have tried both DVI-HDMI as well as S video connections. It has an ATI mobility radeon 9700 chip. My tv is a Samsung LE40R7.

Normally the screen resolution is 1440 by 900 @59hz but on the tv its very hazy with lots of interlaced lines. Turning down the resolution does make it viewable but I can only see part of the desktop and the sidebar disappears from the laptop. I tried the setting in Vista to mirror the desktop on the tv as well as extend it over the two screens but neither work.

Id be grateful for any advice to help me get this sorted. Thanks

There may be a software application (like a taskbar gadget) that does it properly, and this prevents the normal methods of switching from working.
