I asked this on another forum but got no replies; probably the wrong one. Hope this is better.

I have a 160GB external USB hard disk I plug into my laptop. I have a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio for Notebook Expresscard for the audio output into my hi-fi.

The USB disk is now loaded with a mix of 4000+ MP3s at 192 VBR or FLAC quality (all new rips or re-rips now in FLAC), ripped from my CDs.

This setup is giving me similar sound quality to my, now very old, CD player. But symphonic music sometimes seems a little "slim" compared with CDs.

Would an external USB sound device give me better sound.

If so can anyone please suggest a such a device?
