Saw the film last night. Could work out why the 'good cop' allowed Murphy to retain his good name, seemed to go against his ethics throughout the film. Was it because he finally avenged the death of his father?
Julie do you mean Captain Dudley Smith played by James Cromwell? If so it could possible be that if the said he was a villain, they may not have been believed, and the true story would have fallen apart. Remember Detective Lieutenant Ed Exley was also a very good politician/PR so he knew just exactly what he could get away with, and what he couldnt.
When I saw that film the first time in the cinema I lost the plot, I told myself I was going to watch it properly last night but I started going on here and posting stuff and lost the plot again! really should get the DVD.
Exley told the mayor, DA and police commissioner all about Dudly Smith's evil doings at the end and they believed him. Exley then suggested (to further his career) that he would keep his mouth shut about Dudley Smith's dealings to save the LAPD further scandal and disgrace... as long as Exley and Bud White got off clean (and exley got a promotion) and got a few medals. excellent film but it does take a few watches to lock down exactly what is happening.
I meant Dudley Smith! Must have been the wandering Welsh / Irish / American accent that made me think it was Murphy. How many Irish Americans use the expression 'boyo'? Thanks for the explanation. Was the TV version missing anything important that was in the cinema version? Julie
Ah,...... this thread has just made my day. So it wasn't just me who had some unanswered questions at the end of the film. I thought I must have nodded off, or missed something really crucial when I went off for a pee.
Errr......... Wasn't watching video/DVD. It was on terrestrial last night. And don't have a PVR yet either!
Did you not twig? Or did you think it funny a lot of people desided to put the DVD or video on last night.
could someone let me know what the quality is like on the dvd before i buy it such a good film should have a good disc
What was so complicated? Only thing that gets me is that Ed could have at least bargained for a medal for White too! Not fair. Absolutely one of my 'Top 5 Films Ever' (My 'Top 5 Films Ever' list now includes 13 films).
Yeah I knew it was on, but he didn't give any time frame in his post so hard to ascertain whether he was referring to when he had previously seen it or when it was on last night I have the R4 - very nice transfer
