Kramer and other members promoting water cooling- you have alot to answer

I decided this weekend to try and quiten my PC by following some other members lead and going down the water cooling road. The fans on my PC were really starting to drive me mad:mad:

The first thing that I did was to remove all the fans. The one on the processor and graphics card were no problem but the one in the power unit was a bugger to get out.

The most difficult part was sealing all the ventilitation openings in the PC case with silicon. I also put silicon all around the joints on the PC case. The smell of silicon was dreadful but when my wife complained I told her to be patent as it will be worth it when we have a completely silent PC.

Because I had completely sealed the PC case the only opening near top was the DVD drive. So I opened that and put the small hose I had purchased specially for the job into the DVD drive as far as it would go. With what I can only describe as great excitement and anticipation, I turned on the water. It really is amazing just how long it took before the case was complete full, and boy was it heavy. That didn't really bother me as I didn't intend to be moving the PC anyway.

The big moment had arrived so I called in my wife and mother in law (who was visiting) and I announced "prepare to hear nothing!" and flicked the switch on the socket on the wall.

Before I could even press the power button on front of the PC, with a loud bang, the whole place was plunged into darkness

I knew that it was only the tripswitch so I told my onlookers not to panic and I ran out to the hall to turn the trip switch back on. But can u believe it, it wouldn't stay on. After five attempts I decided to try unplugging the PC and would you believe...yes the trip switch stayed on. My conclusion: the PC must have in some way been causing the problem.

After about an hour of tries I finally decided to abandon the whole idea of water cooling and emptied the water out of the PC, put back in the fans (except the fan in the power unit, I had broken that one getting it out) and tried the pc AGAIN. IT STILL CAUSED THE TRIP SWTICH TO BLOW!

My PC is completely shagged thanks to stupid suggestions that I got on this forum. What the hell am I going to do now. I spent two hours last night with a hair drier inside the PC case and it still trips the switch.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

C'mon folks, I don't think it's fair for people to be taking the mickey out of Comer, this is an easy mistake to make if you're not aufait with what you're doing.

Comer, the reason this thread is getting so many views is because it's such a common mistake. Many of the users on this very forum will have made the same error. It's easy for them to now scream "It's just common sense" but unless it was explained to you that you need a return pipe for the water, or that you should, indeed, use distilled water, how would you know? Right?

The good thing is that you should find that the problem is covered under the lifetime warrantee of the power supply that was fitted to the case. All you have to do is take the entire PC to the place you bought the PSU from (I'd do it in person so that you can answer any questions they might ask) and explain that you've had an "ID 10 T" error, that's what they call it in the trade, they'll be impressed that you knew the parlance. They'll probably need you to explain the exact nature of what happened but they should replace your PC with the latest spec. one (it's simpler for them that way, instead of all the insurance wrangles). Usually retailers will issue Dell or Compaq in the case of ID 10 T's but it may be some other brand make.

Good luck and enjoy your new PC.

At last, someone who understands, is sympathetic and gives some helpful advice. That was the whole point of this thread in the first place, not to give people all over the world a forum to make fun of me but to help me out with a mistake that I honostly (hand on heart) believe anyone could have made. I am going into PC World today with my PC and I am (without any shame whatsoever) going to tell them what happened and that they will have to accept that I do qualify as an ID 10 T. I'm sure that it's going to take some convincing but I think that if I persevere, I can convice them that I am an ID 10 T, and will get a replacement PC.

Thanks imoyes

I agree, it's not fair. The problem is that people say "water cooling is good" instead of "getting a specific case, filling it with distilled water and fitting a return pipe is good". I mean, I read on another forum about how good central heating was, so I went and installed some. I got some firewood, dumped it in the center of my home, and lit it. I don't understand what went wrong. Is my carpet supposed to catch fire? I know I wanted a hotter home, but not to the extent of burning the house down. And the insurance company won't give me a :censored: sausage for it - they called it "fraud" :(. I don't understand what happened. It was all going so well until I passed out from the smoke.

I heard that you desperately needed some help with this thing once again!

As I understand it now, you finally got it working again, but being as old and outdated as your CPU was, you followed the advice of another forum member once again, and soldered a second CPU to your original CPU, to double your processing power. But surprisingly, when you turned it on, it made a strange hissing noise, and never even made it to the POST. Is that correct, Comer?

I wish that I could help you with it, but unfortunately, I'm still studying to be a PC technician at this time, and we haven't covered that issue in class yet. However, I did ask all the members of my fora to register here, and tell you what to do about it, if they have any ideas what you did wrong this time. So hopefully, there will be a few of them arriving here very shortly, to assist you.

Greetings from the USA, and thanks for such an entertaining thread here!

What, like filling your pc full of water then hitting the 'on' button

I'm going to read this whole thread when I stop crying.

I assume this was a windup (like I say, haven't been able to read the whole thread yet).

If, by some cruel joke by god, you actuall filled an electronic PC with water - and brought people in to see the effect before trying it yourself (having built several PCs [you, not me] you must know to try things before attempting to show the results off) - my advice would be to sell this story to the Sun.

But it would take a lot for me to believe this really happened.

Love 2theshack's central heating comment.

Has to be a windup as I can't believe anyone would do something like this without actually finding out specifics.

I've heard that drilling a hole in your head can help with headaches but I'm not going to get my Black 'n Decker and play Bob the Builder on my noggin when I next have a hangover!

For how to do it properly: http://www.water-cooling.com/gallery2.php

If this is for real - I suppose it's good that it didn't go wrong and end up being a Darwin award!

A reality check, Comer is alive and well and living in the land of the little green people! Anyone still taken in by this clearly needs the black and decker treatment, Comer did own up to the wind up about 2 years ago! I think he may be watercooling his projectors though, he seems to get through them like most of us get through bog paper.

Hey, don't draw attention to it. I'm not proud that I burnt my house down. I had some nice stuff in there, like a brand new 80286 box, complete with CP/M and, a massive 10MB harddisk and an Audigy 4 Pro that I almost broke when I installed it. I had to get out a hacksaw to get it to fit in the little slot.

BTW, any ideas why I never got that Audigy to work? Creative supply DOS drivers for it, so I thought I could get it to work with CP/M. Do I need to install DOS next time?

Hi Comer,
Glad I could help! Just wondered how it turned out at PC World? Did they confirm that you qualify as an ID 10 T? I have no doubt that they would be the best people to assess your illigibility. I have listened to conversations between some of their staff and have spoken to some of them and I am sure that some of them qualify so they should have a level of empathy. :smashin:

It was amazing, when I told them my story they offered me a job on the spot. They told me I was the greatest f:censored: ID 10 T they had ever come across and that I would make a perfect senior manager. I was really quite chuffed as they also said that with my abilities I would very quickly rise up through the ranks.

Thanks once again imoyes

Why am I suddenly reminded of the head of British Rail?

I don't think it's fair that Comer should have a job at PC World. I mean, I burnt down my house, and about half the neighbourhood as a consequence, purely by accident when I installed my central heating. I am a greater ID 10T than Comer, according to all my friends, family and passers-by. I get a lot of mail that says "You ID 10T!"

He didn't get a job...this is the real story,

He told pc world what he'd done. and the guy called him a stupid F :censored: lmao then he called him a noob and booted him out of the store :hiya:

They said he'd be a great senior manager. I reckon with my level of ID 10T certification, I should be the CEO!

I really should keep up to date with this forum, but no one's told me if I did anything wrong installing my Audigy 4 in my 286 system box. :thumbsdow

Since then, I got a new 16x Dual Layer Pioneer DVD+-RW slot drive. Should I be worried by the heat it generates? To be safe, I water-cooled it. I stood the drive on its end and stuck in a small hose and filled it with water. Then I sealed up the slot so I didn't lose any water. That stuff's expensive, and we're having a bit of a drought at the moment. So I plugged it in and turned it on, and apart from the small amount of smoke that leaked out of the joints, it seems OK. :) But I can't test it, cos the DVD's don't go in the drive any more. Did I do something wrong here?

Don't you just hate it when people quote your entire post then just say something like "Yeah!" or "Me too" or ""? I sure do. STOP IT!

A picture can say a thousand words don't you know ;) :lesson: I was simply surprised that:

a) "Mr. Muppet" was naive enough to think that a "sticky" thread with several thousand views and (more than) a few tongue in cheek replies was actually real (either that or he's actually hilariously funny to everyone except me)

and

b) The same person clearly hadn't bothered to read the replies of the thread up to his point of posting :)

Had you been around for more than 5 minutes you may have picked up on the fact that this is a friendly forum - telling people to "stop it" and implying that they're irritating you after only 12 posts seems a little harsh.

:)

Happy Days...

K.
