I am in the business for some new speakers and consider the KEF Q1 (maple finish if it matters).

What other speakers would you recommend to compare them to?

Needs to be bookshelf, preferrably wood veneer and around the same price as the KEFs.
Will probably drive them from a 2 channel Rotel amp, fed directly from the DVD player (which has a volume control).

Check out the BMW6013 Series 3, Mission 780 and maybe the Castle Richmond 3 all similar prices/specs ... think maybe the Q1 edges the comepitition though

for 2 channel i would look at some of the good deals to be had on used speakers. Not so easy when you have to try and track down all 8 speakers needed for home cinema.

do a search on google for ProAc , dynaudio etc. considering speakers dont change that much from model to model, there are some great deals out there.

always nice to get a £600 speaker that is last years wood finish for £200-250 :)

I was sure the B&W 6 series will be named but it's out for sheer ugliness.

Second hand isn't an option either. Budget isn't the constraint but I have already a 5.1 setup so I just want something smaller now as a two channel system which can be expanded later.

Q1 are great. Stick with them. The only thing to watch is they need good amps to get the most out of them, other than that it is all win win win.

Do you think a Marantz 4200 could drive them. Unfortuanately I cannot get a demo locally of these two. Its quite good for music and has 75 wpc. I always have the option to power amp later. It has occured to me that I should get a budget speaker set (missiom m7 / wharfdale diamond 8) to match my budget amp and budget source (tosh 210)

Back to the origonal thread I loved (as do others) the mision 780 in sterio. They were on offer at superfi for £250, so same price as Q1's. There's the mission m51 also but have'nt heard or seen any reviews yet

    Reiner,
If you read my initial review on the Q1's you will know I'm in agreement with Nick on this one. You won't go far wrong.

Wilf, sorry missed this. I am afraid I don't know the Marantz. What the KEFs do need is good current so worth looking at what they can deliver. 75w should be a minimum in my opinion for these speakers. Can anyone else help here who has KEF Q1 / 15 and a marantz?

Yes pretty much all reviews seem to be very positive.

But the impedance does drop low (just dips under 4 ohms at one or two frequencies) so the amp should be a capable performer into low impedances. Surprised that Kef rate it as an 8 ohm load.

Look at http://www.kef.com/kefimages/danimages/reviews/Q1review.html for more details on this.
