Like many people on this forum I'm trying to balance good stereo music with effective surround sound without filling the room full of speakers. Having experienced the MS Genie system, I've ruled out these types of sub sat packages.

I like both Kef's Q series and Monitor Audios Silver series but would rather not have such noticeable rear boxes.

Would combining Kef Q fronts with Egg rears be an acceptable compromise?

Similarly, MA Silver fronts with Egg rears or possibly Radius satellite rears might be acceptable.

    A typical system might be:

Denon 2105, Kef Q7 or Q5 fronts, Kef Q9C, Kef Egg rears, REL Quake sub.

Or Denon 2105, MA Silver 6 front, MA Silver centre, Kef Egg rears, REL Quake.

Later I plan to add a stereo amp like the Rotel 02 to improve the music side.

Any thoughts and advice on such a set-up would be appreciated.

I'd go for the KEF Q's as fronts and the Eggs as rears - closer to each other in terms of sound so you'd get a better surround package!

I have the Q4's and find they are very good, the only downside is the lack of bass (but hey what are subs for!) However, if you're thinking of the Q5's or Q7's then you shouldn't have a problem here.

The MA silver's are also very good and the good thing is that you should be able to pick these up quite cheap as the new RS range is due out shortly. Both the Kef and the MA Silvers would go well with the Denon so you wouldn't have problem there.

The Denon amps are quite warm, so they may match the MA Silvers (which can have quite a bright sound and take a lot of running in given their metal drivers) better. Best thing to do though is go for a demo.

I believe they are. There have been quite a few retailers clearing out of the old Silver series stock!
