Hi, is anyone in the know as to when Kef will be bringing out a new Q series? The current series are being sold off half price, and I was assuming that a new series would be out this year, but just wondering when(ish) or whether they might be discontinuing them entirely (hope not!).

I might be shopping for a pair of upfiring speakers soon and it would be nice to get Kef Q ones to match the other Kef Q / iQ's. I know they do them for the R series, so thought it might be likely that a new Q series would include them?

The thinking was that the new Q series were to be previewed at Munich, but that's been and gone. As for upfirers KEF recommend them for the whole range including the Reference.

Thanks for that. Shame about the upfirers, was hoping to spend less than £600 on a pair. So, you think it unlikely that the new Q series would include a Q version of the R50?

A Q50 is harder to figure out. How have the bean counters been looking at it, would it be worth KEF building one just for that range. When the R50 was introduced KEF took the Henry Ford stance "you can have it in any colour as long as it's black". Thankfully piano black was my colour anyway.

At the beginning of last year it was almost impossible to get a pair of R50s. I had them on back order with Peter Tyson for almost three months until I got fed up and starting phoning around. I eventually found a pair in a Sevenoaks, the only pair in their chain. AudioT and RS all had back orders. I believe they are stiĺl selling extremely well. Based on this KEF may very well keep it as their only module.

£600 is a lot of money but if I had the room for a second pair I'd have them in a heartbeat.

Fair enough, thanks for the that, very interesting. I won't discount them then. My Kef Q700's are matt black ash, so I would prefer a matt black upfirer, as a better aesthetic match than the shiny black finish.

I don't have an Atmos AVR yet, or much Atmos content, but I do have the option to configure them as height channels and then apply Pro Logic IIz to 2.0 / 5.1 / 7.1 soundtracks. Do you do that with yours, does it sound any good?

Over this weekend I think I will temporarily try this using a pair of Dali Pico's from another room, just to get an idea of what sort effects I get when angling the speakers at the ceiling.

Atmos was out of my reach until modules became available, no way was I being allowed to cut holes in the ceiling, my DIY skills being virtually nil. Configured as front Dolby with the Denon 6200 they have most certainly brought a new dimension to my listening enjoyment.

The whole of the front sound stage is much taller, the same effect I would imagine you get with Pro Logic. It's the ability of the receiver and speakers to give the sound from above that impresses, not only from Atmos discs but by also applying Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X. I've not experienced Atmos with ceiling speakers but many articles have said that modules give a more diffused sound and that I can relate to. With true Atmos or upmixed then correctly placed the R50s certainly put you into a pleasing bubble of sound. 5.1 seems flat in comparison.

You can apply Dolby Surround to any format, 2.0 or 5.1 from broadcasts. Dolby Surround works with TrueHD and Neural:X with DTS HD. Most new receivers in the Denon range also allow cross mixing, ie, DTS HD with Dolby Surround or vice versa.

My source said probably at High End Munich 18-21.5, so around month for announcement! But nothing is 100% sure yet. I would be very suprised if Kef didn`t bring Atmos speakers for new Q, cause Atmos is kinda hot topic now. More and more manufacturers bring Atmos speakers to market.

It'd be good to see an R50 equivalent in any new Q Series they may come up with. With any improvements a new range will bring, it could make the range a very strong contender for budget systems.

They were at Indulgence - amazing sounding 7.2.4 Atmos system with the new Q Series - one of the best rooms at the show in my opinion.

As the R50s are the same price as the R100, I guess they'll be about £430 like the Q150.
