    Hi all,

Received my Scart Commander today and have to say it's superb. Upon release I initially purchased a BT945 Quintro, but on the whole I was dissapointed with this product and returned it to Keene who's service has been excellent and I paid the extra to upgrade.

    Problems/dislikes of BT945:

    1) Poor build quality - especially the scart sockets. I found that it was happy with cheapo cables, but good cables with metal scart plugs tended to fall out. When you put the plugs in the sockets the whole rear of the unit flexed.

    2) One audio channel on the laser disc input packed up after less than 24hrs use.

    3) Terrible audio quality. All audio channels sounded distorted, especially from the Sky box. Even after reducing audio level (as I thought the input was overloaded with the Sky boxes 2v op) there was noticable distortion in the audio.

    4) Audio delay. If it wasn't for the poor quality this may have been good thing (to compensate the plasma), but there was definately a delay between the audio going and in and what came out. To prove the point, if I routed one channel through the BT945 and one not you got almost a double beat when listing to music (e.g. MTV).

    5) Lack of ability to disable the auto scart switching (would have resulted in snipping wire 8 in scart cables).

So far though I can't fault the Scart Commander. Build quality is great, as is audio (no distortion or delay) and PQ (only tried switching RGB to a JS RGB-VGA box). If anyone wants more info (or the manual for the Scart Commander) then download it here.

Thanks for the heads up, I was on the verge of buying the quintro, but won't bother if it's that bad.

    Just noticed in the specification.

"2 control channels for AV system control (pin 8 for AV active and widescreen / normal, Pin 16 for RGB or not RGB selection) "

Does this mean that only two of the four inputs will do auto switching?

All 4 channels (AV inputs) certainly auto switched. I think they are saying that the status of both pin 8 and pin 16 are switched from the selected scart input to the scart output.

Personally I hate the auto switching and I am so pleased you can switch it off.

Maybe I was unlucky with the audio problem on my Quintro? I did think the recording facilities on it were good, but if it compromises quality then what's the point.

Surely this thread should be in 'General Hardware' forum?
And with a more descriptive Header like 'Quintro Review' would have helped.

Then I (and others) would have read before purchasing

Only stumbled upon it by chance!

    Thanks Rob100

Hmm, maybe the wrong forum - but this is where I "hang out" and lack of conectivity is a major problem for most plasma owners.

I was never meant to be a Quintro review, I was really just praising the Scart Commander, but it kinda developed from there!

Received my Quintro and I am well pleased with it.

Must admit, I didn't experience ANY of the problems that Rob100 did (must have had a real duff one).

Pic & sound are fine, no distortion.

    Auto detect works a treat.

I use heavy IXOS SCART leads and they fit in fine, no probs.

No audio delay, although there is some screen flicker (few secs) when you initially turn a device on, but after that it's ok.

    Well worth a look.

Isn't this the same as the B-Tech Quintro re-badged (and a LOT more expensive)?

Although I don't know where the 'trilogy' bit comes in

Selecting 'TV' simply puts your TV in 'tuner mode' and 'turns off' the Quintro. Don't know why you're not getting any sound.

How have you got it all connected up?

scart lead from tv to quintro, dvd, laserdisc, video and sky all in their respective sockets and playstation in the aux, quintro connected to amp via phonos from hi fi phono plugs

I only listen to the tv through the amp so the tv volume is turned off, does the quintro not get the sound via the amp for the tv setting

Don't think it does and would explain why you're not getting sound from your amp.

'TV' I think means no input device. (not that obvious!)

You may need to add your TV to one of the SCART/phono INPUTS from an OUTPUT from your TV.

btw, I thought the aux wasn't rgb compatible. If so then you're better off putting your playstation on a different scart input.

E-mail or PM me if you like.

Hello all (just getting that out of the way as this is my first post).

A quick question that hopefully someone will answer that has one of these units:

Have any of you got the unit connected to a TV that has a 'smart' mode (that's what my Sony calls it) such that it will go into wide screen mode when it gets a wide screen signal?

The reason I ask is that I bought a Trilogy 1 unit from Lektropacks and my TV would get a bit confussed and constantly change between smart and wide screen modes when a wide screen signal was being sent, either from my Sky/TiVo or my DVD player.

I've since taken the unit back to Lektropacks who, after I queried what was happening, said that out of the several hundred units they'd sold I was the third to report the problem and they had no solution.

The Trilogy unit looks identical to the one sold by Keene's & Beyond hi-fi but doesn't have the Qunitro name on it so might not actually be the same but I doubt it. This gives me hope that getting the b-tech version from these other places may give a working unit (& cheaper too :) ).

My set-up in case it helps:

    Sony KV28FX20 TV
    Toshibe SD2109 DVD player
    TiVo
    Sky digital Pace box

    Toshiba.

I used to have a Sony WS TV (old model) and I had many problems with WS switching, before I had the Quintro.
