Anyone know which has the best picture and reliability for the above SVHS decks?
Both very similar. If you are after the best picture quality on a VHS VCR, find yourself a second hand D-VHS deck. The JVC HM DR 10000EK has DVD picture quality and 21 hours on a tape. You won't regret it...
I've used them for some years now. I would never go back to S-VHS, and D-VHS has a larger storage capability than many DVD recorders for the equivalent picture quality. (4.7Mb/s at 21 hours, or 14.1Mb/s at 7 hours on a tape. Current DVDs peak at nearly 10, if your really lucky.) Sadly these machines are no longer made, but the new double speed 28Mb/s versions record High Definition TV, so they can't be that bad !
